Learning how to map the hoof to the internal foot print allows you to correctly balance the hoof and correct hemodynamics. This restores proprioception and starts the healing process. This horse will be walking differently while she gets used to feeling the ground. Does this “footy” aspect mean she is lame? Not necessarily. With no positivity to hoof testers or digital pulses, my opinion is that she needs soft footing to move her feet around and relieve pressure where she needs to so the healing process can begin. She may even abscess as the hoof begins to essentially flush out the congestion. Both front feet, both same day.

Today’s good work…

Update - today this horse, after being in a stall with a run with moderately soft ground, showed evidence of not moving as much as I would like. She had some swelling in all 4 legs (stocking up). She was then put in a sand round pen. Watching her walk, she was landing correctly and it isn’t surprising that she was adjusting to feeling the ground in a different way. In the sand footing she immediately started walking more and normally and the swelling went away. This tells me that she hadn’t moved much during the night. She also has a soft tissue issue in a hind foot that was evident with swelling before her trim. Recommended sand footing for at least a week or boots if her environment was not as soft as she needs. Her frogs and her digital cushion were atrophied and the sand can move enough to stimulate the frog. I would never lower the heels to make the frog touch the ground. She could have perfect hoof wear applied or have a good environment for her rehab. Also PEMF and body work is recommended to help her move better with less compensation and thus odd wearing of her feet. It will be a combination of rebalancing the feet and the body until she is moving well and wearing her feet in a good way. Restoring circulation and lymphatics and letting her learn to actually feel the ground again. (proprioception) is key.
