Important information!

Avian influenza (H5N1) is a flu strain normally carried by birds that has begun spreading to wild and domestic cats. We’ve collected some information to help you protect yourselves and the cats you love.

⚠️ How are cats getting H5N1?

Many of the recent cases have been caused by food – cats being fed raw food or unpasteurized milk. Some brands of raw pet foods have already been recalled and it is recommended to fully cook any meats served to your cat.

Cats who spend time outdoors can also contract H5N1 through exposure to infected birds (or by eating them). Farm cats may be at risk through exposure to farm animals or workers.

⚠️ What are the symptoms of H5N1 in cats?

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), illness may start with loss of appetite, lethargy, and fever, then quickly progress, with cats exhibiting:

• Neurologic symptoms
• Severe depression
• Discharge from the eyes or nose
• Other respiratory signs, including labored or short breathing, and possibly sneezing or coughing

⚠️ What should I do if my cat shows symptoms?

Call your vet! It’s important to call before bringing your cat in so that they can take necessary precautions.

Protect yourself and other pets: separate the affected cat from other animals in the home and wash your hands before and after any time you handle the affected cat or their food and litter. Wash linens and clothing regularly.

⚠️ How can I protect my cat?

Keep your cat inside! Outdoor cats run a much higher risk of exposure to infected animals.

Thoroughly cook meat before feeding, and avoid feeding raw meat-based treats or diets.

Avoid contact with dead or sick birds or wildlife. If you work with poultry or livestock, wash your hands thoroughly after any contact and before handling your cat.

Change and clean your clothes if you have reason to believe you have been exposed to any affected animals.

•••

Knowing the signs and taking precautions can protect you and your cats from infection. This is just a quick guide; you can find more information through the CDC or the AVMA.

If you have any concerns, contact your veterinarian immediately.

🦃 Happy Thanksgiving 🐾

As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving, it’s important to remember our furry friends. While it’s tempting to share the feast with our pets, some Thanksgiving foods can be harmful to dogs. Here’s a quick guide to keep your pets safe this holiday:

**🚫 Foods to Avoid:**
1. **Turkey Bones:** They can splinter and cause choking or intestinal blockages.
2. **Onions & Garlic:** These can damage a dog’s red blood cells and lead to anemia.
3. **Stuffing:** Often contains ingredients like onions and spices that are harmful to dogs.
4. **Cranberry Sauce:** High in sugar and can upset your dog’s stomach.
5. **Chocolate and Desserts:** Always a no-go! Chocolate is toxic to dogs.

**😊 Safe Foods in Moderation:**
1. **Plain Turkey:** A small piece of cooked turkey (without skin or bones) is a great treat!
2. **Sweet Potatoes:** Cooked and unseasoned, they’re a healthy and delicious option.
3. **Pumpkin:** Plain canned pumpkin (not the spiced pie filling) is great for digestion.
4. **Green Beans:** Fresh or steamed, they can be a crunchy snack your dog may love.

This Thanksgiving, let’s be thankful for our furry companions and keep them safe. If you need someone to care for your pets while you enjoy the holiday, remember that Jen’s Happy Pets is here for you!

Wishing you and your pets a joyful and safe Thanksgiving! 🐶❤️

Today, we pause to honor and thank all the brave men and women who serve our country. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed, and we are deeply grateful for your dedication and courage.

We also want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the families who support these heroes. Your strength, love, and resilience are invaluable, especially during times of separation and uncertainty.

A special shoutout my employee Michael’s son and his dog who are currently serving in the Middle East. We are thinking of you and all our heroes today. Thank you for your service! ❤️🐾🙏🏻

🎃🐾 **Happy Halloween from Jen's Happy Pets!** 🐾🎃

As we gear up for a night of fun and frights, let’s remember to keep our furry friends safe! Here are a few tips for pet parents:

1. **Candy Caution:** Make sure your pups don’t sneak any of that tempting Halloween candy. Chocolate, wrappers, and certain candies can be harmful to them!

2. **Secure Your Pets:** With all the doorbell ringing and trick-or-treaters, it's important to ensure your pets are safely secured inside. This will help prevent them from slipping out when the door opens.

Keep your pets happy and safe this Halloween! 🐶💕

Feel free to share your Halloween pet photos in the comments! 🎉👻

Today, we remember and pay tribute to the extraordinary heroes of September 11, 2001. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the firefighters, police officers, and emergency responders who selflessly rushed into danger, putting their lives on the line to save others. Their courage and dedication exemplify the very best of humanity.

We also want to honor the four-legged heroes who played a crucial role in the search and rescue efforts. These brave dogs, with their unwavering loyalty and incredible sense of smell, tirelessly worked alongside their human companions, searching for survivors and providing comfort in the midst of chaos. Their contributions were invaluable, and they remind us of the bond between humans and animals in times of crisis.

Let us never forget the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the spirit of resilience that emerged from that day. Together, we stand in solidarity and remembrance. 🕊️❤️

The shelters throughout the country are completely overwhelmed and the seniors are the last to get adopted. I have always adopted senior dogs and cats and would never change that. They have a certain grace and appreciation about them ❤️.
