If you’re interested in adopting a retired MWD here’s the link to fill out the application. Please note there are some very specific requirements that you must be meet such as you can not have more than 3 dogs, all individuals living in your home must be over the age of 5 years old, and you must have a fence at least 6 foot tall.

If you do have an adopted MWD and need training to work through a behavioral issue or help learning how to handle them PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not take them to anyone who does not have prior experience as a military working dog handler. While this is not a specific requirement it is extremely important to train with someone who is knowledgeable in the handling of MWDs. I provide this service free of charge to ANYONE who needs help with retired MWDs. Please do your research before adopting. There are a lot of great dogs down there that are in need of a loving home and there are non profit organizations that help pay for the medical care of retired MWDs however ultimately the financial burden falls on the adopter (wish our government would step up and do more rather than send billions in annual aid to foreign countries but hey). If you need assistance don’t hesitate to reach out to us for help.

A lot of our success as a training business is because we prioritize building healthy relationships between dogs and their owners.

Usually when owners have dysfunctional problems with their dogs it’s because there is a breakdown in the relationship between dog and owner. This causes a lot of stress in lives and homes of dogs and their owners.

The first step in the process towards a more pleasing life with your dog is to learn how to effectively communicate with your dog. Not all dogs learn the same way, their personalities are each different, some are dominant, some submissive, some are confident, some have no confidence at all, some will gladly allow themselves to be led, others will protest being led every step of the way.

Learning how to work through these problems and challenges with your dog gives you as the owner insight and confidence to handle and lead your dog. Educating owners in proper training, handling, containment, and management techniques gives them tools to start to reshape positive behaviors. We believe this is the superior way to approach training.

Let’s talk about bath time. This time of the year in Eastern NC bathing both indoor and outdoor dogs is SUPER important. What is the number one tool I recommend for bathing and washing dogs? The answer is a $2.00 pair of rubber gloves from the dollar store. I’ve seen a lot of products and gimmicks over the years that claim to help dog owners when it comes to bathing but nothing works as good as a pair of rubber gloves. The rubber helps grip dead shed hair and debris even when they’re soaking wet. It also provides the best distribution of soap throughout their entire coat. Don’t waste your money on scrubbers. Just grab the gloves.

No dog ever rises to achieve their full potential on their own. On their own dogs don’t go on to learn to detect explosives and provide for the national security of our nation, learn to screen patients for cancer and other diseases, or learn to conduct backcountry search and rescue operations. Left to fend for themselves dogs run away from home not able to find their way back and wallow in ditches barely scrapping by. It takes a HUMAN that believes in the dog to be the catalyst to spark and inspire change. Someone that is willing to commit to the dog to help them achieve their full potential.

A dog will never wake up one day and come to the self realization that they’re doing things wrong. “I’ve been living wrong. I’m a bad dog. I need some Jesus in my life” is not something a dog will ever mentally process. Dogs only do whatever we have allowed them to do. If your dog counter surfs the harsh reality is you’ve allowed that behavior to manifest with no consequence for action. If your dog jumps on everyone that comes into your home it is because that has been allowed and likely reinforced via the embrace received by those the dog jumps on.

Make no mistake about it. Dogs communicate and learn through correction and reinforcement. All contextual creatures do. A mother will correct her puppies during the weening process. Moms tired and physically exhausted. Her body is drained of all energy and nutrients. For the first 3-4 weeks of her puppies lives the action of running up to mom and nursing has been getting more intense as the puppies get older. The first time a sharp tooth sinks into her she corrects her pups. Thus begins the weening process. She corrects them not just once or twice but likely multiple times during the weening process in order to undue her puppies contextual understanding of how to interact with their mother.

This interaction between puppy and mother throws a wrench into many mainstream training theories and ideologies which in my opinion are flawed and do not represent how dogs actually communicate. In fact I believe it’s rather arrogant that we as humans take dogs from their world at a young age and then expect them to learn and communicate as humans do.

“My dog failed out of that training program.” That’s something I’ve heard over the years from many clients that have come to us after having a bad experience with other trainers. However it’s not a statement that I can even process. It doesn’t exist in my world. The dog didn’t fail out of the training program, the “trainer” failed the dog and the client because they simply lack the experience to handle and train more difficult dogs. Dogs CAN’T fail. Humans fail.

If you’re struggling with your dog the first step is making a decision to commit to changing your relationship with your dog. If you have a more difficult dog that means you need to have the confidence to be able to handle that dog. If your dog lashes out at strangers, attacks the delivery driver, bites children, or acts forward aggressive in any manner that’s NOT PROTECTIVE behavior. The delivery driver is not a threat. You invited them to be at your home by accepting delivery packages. 99.99% of people walking past you in public are not a threat. Children are not a threat. Again that’s not protective behavior whatsoever and you have a responsibility to check that behavior especially if you take that kind of dog out in public around other people. If someone gets hurt that’s not the dogs fault. That’s your fault as the human for allowing it to happen. If you have that type of dog and can’t handle that dog then you need to work with someone that has the experience and can teach you how to handle that dog. Sure the dog will get the needle but at the end of the day the responsibility lies in the hands of the human. All because it was allowed to happen.

Be better. Train the dog.

Starting Friday April 12th we will begin offering low volume boarding services.

What this means is instead of your dog sitting penned up in a boarding kennel facility or spending their entire day home alone while you’re away, they can be spending their time during the day hanging out with our family, having fun, taking walks, and playing! This gives dogs a much more comfortable and natural experience while their owners are away.

ALL dogs will be evaluated by Kevin for any behavioral issues prior to being approved to stay. No dog aggressive or people aggressive dogs will be allowed to stay for boarding.

$75.00/night weekend (Friday-Saturday)

All dogs must be current on vaccines and proof of vaccination is required.

Little miss Callie is one of the sweetest dogs we’ve had roll through our private instruction training course. Her smiles light up the room when she walks in. She had a bad habit of pulling her owners on leash making it difficult and dangerous to walk her at times. But now she walks perfectly on leash and will get to enjoy LOTS of walks at the beach. As you all know RLAR is my dream. One that I promised my Great Dane Alfred I would bring to fruition. If you don’t know about Alfred, look him up! He was my very first rescue that was slated for euthanasia prior to ever thinking about starting a rescue. RLAR exists because Alfred saved me from an abusive relationship. I promised him if I ever made it out of there that I would rescue more misunderstood and misplaced dogs, cats, ferrets, parrots, chinchillas, chickens, rabbits, geese, goats….quite literally if they needed me (now us) I would step in. Alfy passed in 2020 of a gastric torsion at 6.5 years old. I had 5 wonderful years with him and he was able to baby multiple litters of kittens and puppies prior to his untimely departure.

That’s how I feel about the rescue, if we close now I haven’t gotten to do all of the things I want to do in order to better support the animals in my community. I want to see the euthanasia and intake numbers for Sampson County Animal Shelter plummet. I want to see adoptions and rescues pulling these lovely souls skyrocket. I want to help shut down inhumane breeding facilities and fighting rings. I want to see more animals with homes and proper care than without. If we close now, it’s an untimely departure.

Please help us. Please help me. Please help them.
