Herd 2 Human is an equine inter-species communication program developed to assist with trauma recovery and general wellness. It is based on learning through teaching and sharing the love of horsemanship with others in such a way that builds deeper relationships and strengthens personal self awareness. For years we have had the pleasure of experiencing countless stories of positive personal growth

Scott is a Sergeant Major - US Army Retired, rancher and County Commissioner of Carbon County, MT. While Scott’s focus in on veterans, he connects with our local youth in an amazing way.

Jeff Patterson has been a horseman his entire life. Jeff is the founder and master instructor of Herd 2 Human. Jeff began developing Herd 2 Human over thirteen years ago at his farm east of Missoula. The program originally focused on Veterans who suffered from PTSD or thoughts of su***de. However, Jeff soon realized that Herd 2 Human benefits anyone who has suffered some kind of trauma in their lives. In 2017, the VA approved the Herd 2 Human instructor certification school for SAA (GI Bill Funding) for Veterans qualified to attend instructor school. Now, Jeff teaches and certifies others like Mariah to share Herd 2 Human around the country, providing independent Herd 2 Human programs, like Amethyst Equine, in different communities.

Time to meet this month's second spotlight! Amethyst Equine! Amethyst Equine is a Herd 2 Human program meant specifically for teens in Yellowstone County. Herd 2 Human is an equine interspecies communication groundwork course designed to help individuals mitigate the anticipation, stress, and aftermath of trauma. The course goal is to provide tools that help individuals formulate new or renewed approaches and methods of understanding past, present or future psychological stressors or trauma that can be practiced long after completing the course. The methods used in the Herd 2 Human course promote a balance between the intuitive and cognitive thought processing of traumatic events. Herd 2 Human promotes the thought: While trauma is stressful and can be disabling, there are lessons to be learned through building appropriate and meaningful relationships with horses that are transferable and sustainable in everyday life. These lessons involve methods of perceiving and accepting that stressors or trauma and the stress of trauma can be reduced or mitigated by Herd 2 Human techniques.

Our Story

According to the 2018 VA Report on Veteran Su***de:

20 Veterans commit su***de every day nationwide.

According to the VA Government Website and US Census Bureau:

Of all fifty states, Montana is number 1 for Veteran su***de.

Montana is the home to 175,000 Veterans per capita, second only to Alaska.

Together we can mitigate the effects of PTSD. Post-traumatic stress may always exist, but it doesn’t have to be a disorder. Our goal is to help make that difference by providing a series of six-week Herd 2 Human programs for groups and individuals throughout the year. We believe those struggling with PTSD can learn to drop the “D.” While we provide services to all, we are dedicated to helping our veterans. They have been there for us. We want to be there now for them.

Originally a horse training program offered at Willowbend Farm, Herd 2 Human evolved into a program that is proven to help humans with PTSD. Students learn about themselves and become more resilient through experiencing effective communication with horses.

You don’t have to have horse experience to benefit from Herd 2 Human. While it is hands-on work with horses, students do not ride as part of the six-week program.

Human is about inter-species communication. It was developed to assist with trauma recovery and general wellness by learning through teaching and sharing the love of horsemanship with others in such a way that builds deeper relationships and strengthens personal self-awareness. For years we have had the pleasure of experiencing countless stories of positive personal growth and recovery with those who have attended our clinics and private sessions, civilians, veterans, active military.
