It is with immense sadness we announce the passing of our leader, friend, and mentor, president and CEO, Dr. Brian Davis. Brian was an exceptionally talented and intelligent individual who left a tremendous imprint on the education and zoological fields. Furthermore, he was a beautifully compassionate human being who lifted others up and dedicated himself to creating a caring and diverse space at the Aquarium.

He was a dynamic thinker and always pushed the boundaries of what we could achieve, making Georgia Aquarium an extraordinary place. He was one of the first employees at the Aquarium prior to opening in 2005 and led us through years of innovation and growth. Brian’s indelible imprint made all those he knew better – we are better because of Brian.

As we navigate this heartbreaking news, our priority lies with caring for staff. We may have limited operations over the coming days to allow our staff time to grieve.

“We are heartbroken by this news. Brian was a giant in leadership with his intellect, wisdom, and imagination,” said Steve Koonin, Chairman of the board of Georgia Aquarium.

Our thoughts are with Brian’s family and all those that he touched throughout his life.

Do you have a passion for coral restoration, care, and husbandry? POSITION NOW OPEN at KML: Full time Biological Scientist - KML. Duties will include assisting with and/or performing care and husbandry for marine organisms to support restoration projects conducted at KML. Other duties: Assist with KML seawater systems maintenance. Pilot KML vessels for academic and research groups. Scientific diving to support researchers. Social media and outreach.

REQUIRED: Minimum of a bachelor's degree and 2 years research experience; Current SCUBA certification with a minimum of 50 open water dives

PREFERRED: Masters degree; Boat handling skills to safely operate small research vessels in marine coastal waters; Advanced Open Water SCUBA certification, Rescue Diver, or AAUS status.

In case you have not heard.

The Marine Aquarium Societies of North America (MASNA) deeply regrets to announce the cancellation of the 2024 Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA), originally slated for August 30th to September 1st at the Swan and Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida. This decision, made by our Board of Directors with heavy hearts and immense disappointment, stems from a list of factors including disruptions to our revenue stream post Covid, pre existing contractual obligations, and a systemic change of how the aquarium community gathers and shares educational information. Despite our earnest efforts, we are unable to proceed with the event as planned.

We understand the excitement and anticipation that attendees, exhibitors, and partners had for MACNA 2024, and are forever grateful to those who have shared their support and encouragement. All ticket holders will receive a full refund of their ticket purchase.
We hope there is some way the education, scholarship, awards and other programs that have made MASNA a key factor in the marine aquarium community for over 30 years, can continue, and not be lost forever.

We express our sincerest gratitude to everyone, especially the companies that have shown support for MASNA/MACNA, and we encourage the community at large to support those companies that stepped up in sponsoring this year’s events. 🐠🌊 Exciting News from Central Campus Aquarium Science! 🌊🐠

For the past 5 years, our dedicated Aquarium Science students have been tirelessly working on a monumental project: designing and building a 2,400 gallon system for breeding marine ornamental fishes in captivity. Today, we celebrate a significant milestone in conservation efforts!

Did you know? There are approximately 18,000 species of fishes in the ocean, yet only about 450 of those species have ever been successfully bred in captivity. That's why the work our students are doing is so crucial.

On April 12th, 2024, our students witnessed the fruits of their labor as they collected the first eggs from their project. 🥚🎉 Senior Brighton Biddler captured an incredible moment under the microscope this morning, photographing three eggs less than 20 hours old. And guess what? These little eggs are set to hatch by the end of the day!

While it's still too early to determine the exact species, the possibilities are endless. Could they be tangs, butterflyfish, hawkfish, or perhaps a small angelfish? Only time will tell!

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all past and present students of Central Campus for their unwavering dedication and hard work, making this remarkable project a reality. Together, we're making waves in marine conservation! 🌊👏
