The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is happy to announce upon receipt of cleared water quality tests from Michigan State University and Iowa State University toxicology, our staff has begun the process of safely reintroducing fish to the Gulf of Mexico aquarium. In addition to the aquarium’s current fish population, we will be welcoming an estimated 120 fish by mid-December. Over the course of the coming weeks, we look forward to introducing visitors to new species like hogfish, goatfish (pictured) and filefish. We will also celebrate the return of some of our community favorites like the Green Moray, Porcupinefish, and Queen Triggerfish.

As an Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) accredited facility, we hold the highest standard of care for our animals. We are excited for the educational experiences these new species bring to the aquarium.

We extend a sincere thank you to our River Museum community for the support during the closure and look forward to creating lasting memories not only at the Gulf of Mexico Aquarium but across our entire 14-acre campus.

It's hard to find teachers for STEM subjects, but a school system in a landlocked state has found a way to make it work with marine science.

We are immensely grateful to the dedicated team that rode out the storm at the Zoo.

Their initial reports indicate that the Zoo sustained some damage due to the high winds associated with the storm and is currently without power. All 1,000 animals entrusted in our care are safe and will remain in their night houses and hurricane shelter locations. The team will continue to conduct a thorough safety assessment and, once roads are safe to travel, the recovery team will begin clean up and restoration efforts.

Our thoughts are with our community and fellow Florida residents as we recover from this unprecedented storm.

Florida friends and colleagues in the path of Hurricane Milton, ZDR3 Network response teams and allies are rallying to support you!

Our staff has identified ZDR3 Network response teams that are currently packing so they will be ready to roll to provide assistance to those who request it. We’ll all head your way as soon as we confirm there are safe routes into the impacted area.

In addition, more than 50 ZDR3 Network zoological facilities have committed material assets and resources! (That list keeps growing!) We sought those commitments now because we know that in the aftermath of a big storm it can be difficult to obtain building materials, fuel, water, specialty food for your animals, and much more.

Recovering from a major event is exhausting, stressful, and often traumatizing. So we’ve also talked to our friends at Growing Resiliency for Aquarium and Zoo Employees, LLC (GRAZE). They are on standby to provide psychological first aid to facility staff members remotely and, if requested, in person.

On another note:
Thank you to the many, many supporters who have been sharing our posts! We are still a fairly young organization and some facilities are just learning about the ZDR3 Network. That has led to more joining to offer and receive assistance. Please keep sharing our posts to people you know who care about the many zoological facilities that we all treasure.

We are Stronger Together

Note: The map of the projected storm track was created on 10/8/24. ZDR3 maps incoming storm systems, using NOAA data, by superimposing storm information against a map of ZDR3 Network facilities.
