MISS MARTINA MARGARITA is ready to start her search for her forever home. On September 5th she had her first of 84 daily injections and we would love to have her in a HOME of her own before Christmas.
Martina Margarita THEN: lethargic, underweight, distended abdomen, diarrhea, lack of appetite, and the weakest saddest cry/meow you’ve ever heard.
Martina Margarita NOW: A bubbly personality that will light up a room, a joyful voice you can hear clearly from across the hall. She loves to cuddle and play, loves to chase, and will play FETCH for as long as you’re willing to toss the toy for her to bring back. She is an overall beautiful and energetic teenager kitten! Her only true drawback: her flatulence (you were going to find out if you took her home, so no sense in trying to hide it). She has made her mark on two foster families in her time with us.
Background story:
Martina, is one of 4 kittens who came to us with their mama Dolly this summer. She appeared to be healthy and active and loved to eat and play with her siblings. When she was spayed the doctor noticed some abnormal fluid build up in her abdomen and recommended follow up with primary vet. She started to get a bloated belly and became more lethargic. After 3-4 vet visits, with some blood work, a f***l exam, and a sedated X-ray, Dr Wickenheiser was able to rule out many other potential causes and diagnose FIP.
Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a viral disease of cats caused by certain strains of a virus called the feline coronavirus. Most strains of feline coronavirus are found in the gastrointestinal tract and do not cause significant disease. 5-6 years ago this would have been a death sentence for little Martina.
Today there are treatment options, although not FDA approved at this time, that have a lot of research and positive results. Our team has put in a lot of hours researching and doing what we can to give her this best chance at recovery. However, this means a daily injection for an expected 84 days (12 weeks) with several check ups and blood work labs.
We are so appreciative of the team at Cloquet Animal Hospital and consultation and support from Ask Vet Christine to help us help them.
Help us continue to fundraise this week to help more local animals like Martina, as we work toward a building for a local animal shelter. Give to the MAX: Early Giving Matched Donation up to 10k for CCAR
