Another long, long haul complete! The sixth of 2025.

This 5,319 mile haul began with three pick ups from SC, ascended above Madison, WI, headed east to Auburn, NH, made several stops along the coastal States to Morriston, FL, and ended in SC. Ten horses in all.

This trip was especially unique, in that, we hauled a 19+ hand Percheron from one of our breeding clients just below Buffalo, NY, and we hauled the cutest herd of miniatures to NC.

We also took Jamie Stokes’ advice (one of our dearest colleagues) and tried Blue Beacon truck wash. We’ve tried other truck washes and this is by far the brightest the big rig has been.

If you’re looking for a great hauling alternative to us, Jamie Stokes should be one of your first calls! She and her family definitely do an amazing job. They haul, train, event, and do everything else associated with being a full equestrian. And you definitely want a horse person hauling your horses. 5-star reviews and a veritable cornucopia of references. Thank you for the advice, Jamie!

As always, we also trusted tried and true apparel from Farm Livin’. Great products from amazing, hard working folks. Check out their website today! You won’t regret it!

Short haul (fifth of 2025) in the books!

This 618 mile trip began in SC, dropped off at Le Bonheur Equestrian in between Atlanta and Chattanooga, GA, and returned to SC. We took our small rig for this trip. Denver stayed warm and cozy in his full blanket.

Since the trailer was empty on the way back and since the site was only a few miles from our drop off point, we were able to quickly visit New Echota which was the former capital of the Cherokee Nation before the tribe was forcibly relocated to eastern Oklahoma during the Trail of Tears. As a former Oklahoma native, I’ve driven through the Cherokee Nation more times than I can count but I never saw where it originated. Their story is arguably one with the most tragedy because they were the tribe which tried to assimilate the most to the customs of white settlers (ie a printed news paper, constitution, US governmental recognition, their own supreme court, etc) but once gold was found on their land, they were finally driven away. Visiting the site is very affordable and definitely worth it.

Though we wish our horse doctors could be there for our equine friends in any emergency, the reality is that our horses' primary veterinarian cannot be available 24/7 and still juggle the needs of their own personal lives, health and happiness.

The most significant pain point for many veterinarians is caring for their clients during regular business hours and then also being on call for emergencies after hours. For single-doctor or small practices, this traditionally has been the case most nights of the week.

However, private veterinary practices and veterinary schools have more recently focused on developing new models for emergency care which ease the strain on individual practitioners. This includes the growth of emergency cooperatives where two or more practices in a geographic area work together to share after-hours care, as well as more emergency-only practices and the use of tele-triage services to address client concerns after normal business hours.

As equine veterinarians reevaluate what after-hours care looks like for their practices, the support of their clients is critical to creating a balance that works for both parties. If your horse doctor talks with you about changes in how after-hours care is delivered, we hope you’ll welcome the adjustments. This evolution of emergency care must take place in order for equine veterinarians to avoid burnout and continue to be at their best to treat all of your equine friends.

The fourth trip of 2025 is complete!

This 1,587 mile long haul was part of a multiple hauler effort to relocate horses and other live stock from NC to upstate NY after their original location was destroyed from a hurricane last year. We were contacted and asked to participate by a larger shipper for this haul. The pick up location was a temporary home as they slowly made their way north.

This was one trip and we hauled nine horses on one go. The temperature in Remsen, NY was -1 when we dropped off (and fell to -4 as we later snoozed) but all horses were very warm and comfy upon arrival in our fully insulated van.

This was our first trip involving other shippers with these kind of logistical challenges, but we got our portion done efficiently and effectively.

WINTER WEATHER FEEDING TIPS ✅🐴

Horses need more hay in cold weather because their energy requirements increase. The amount of hay a horse needs depends on the temperature, the horse's body weight, and other factors.

HOW MUCH HAY TO FEED? 🤔
🔹 Rule of thumb: Feed an extra 2 lbs of hay for every 10°F below freezing.
🔹 Body weight: Horses should eat 1.5–2% of their body weight in hay daily. For the average 1,200 lb horse, that equates to 18-24 lbs of hay per day.
🔹 Winter weather: Hay needs can increase by 30–50%. For the average 1,200 lb horse, that can increase daily hay requirements up to 23-31 lbs.

WHY FEED MORE HAY - WHY NOT GRAIN? 🤔
🔹 Forage is a better source of energy than grain because it produces more heat through bacterial fermentation.
🔹 Fiber should be the first thing in your horse's diet to increase during cold weather because microbes in the hindgut produce heat when breaking down fiber.
🔹 A sudden large increase in grain/carbohydrates can cause an imbalance in the hindgut and lead to issues like colic or colitis.

WHAT ELSE TO FEED? 🤔
🔹 Salt: To ensure adequate hydration, horses should have access to loose-free choice trace mineralized salt or, alternatively, top dress feed with salt. More info: https://www.fenwayfoundation.com/post/salt-an-ounce-of-colic-prevention
🔹 Water: Horses should have access to unlimited ice-free water. More info: https://www.fenwayfoundation.com/post/winter-water-consumption-impaction-colic
🔹 Supplements: If horses can't maintain weight, you can add higher-calorie supplements like grain-based concentrates or high-fat supplements
🔹 Oils: Supplemental oils provide more calories via fat per gram than carbohydrates. Tip: choose oils with a balanced omega 3/6 ratio.

The third haul of 2025 is complete!

This 3,251 mile long haul began with two pickups in SC, swung up to MA, transitioned west to OH, and zigzagged south making several stops with the final being in Williston, FL. Ten horses in all.

Roads were clear with minor snowfall up north. All horsies were comfortable, and well fed with constant access to water.

Our next haul will occur very soon and be a collaborative effort with a convoy or four high capacity rigs moving an entire farm! We’ve been asked by a larger shipper to participate, so I guess we’re “Movin’ on up…” (Jeffersons theme song, lol). Pics to follow!!

The second haul of 2025 was tactically performed after a major snowstorm and completed before the next major round which begins in a couple hours.

On this 2,142 mile trip, we posted a personal best by hauling eight horses for one buyer. We hauled ten in all. The first leg began in SC which dropped two to Boston Mass and the other eight were retrieved in Ohio and were dropped in SC. All roads were cleared and safe so we were glad we waited until after the first round. There were still several instances of remaining evidence from previous accidents.

The temp dropped to eight with a very stout wind and the high never exceeded 25, but all horses were very comfortable in our fully insulated van.

The next haul is tentatively scheduled to begin this Sunday as long as road and weather reports are promising.
