Well there has been a lot of changes in Hops A Lot Farms. Brenin is a Senior in at Eastern New Mexico University. Now Brenin and Kara, Brenin's mom, are co-owners. We are still shooting to raise the best stock we can to so we can help kids place as high as they can. We will always love seeing the smiles on the kids faces as they are winning.

We will also be showing in ABRA shows ourselves. We are going to continue raising Californians and Mini Rex.

This is Kara.

I know that people think I’m a lot crazy, but I love my rabbit hobby and the friends I’ve made in this hobby! The fun and companionship doesn’t stop just because you are an adult. I have made friends with people that I would have never met without rabbits.

This weekend I t**e 17 rabbits (9 Californians and 8 Mini Rex) to Hereford for the LEBRA Rabbit Show by my self no Brenin. It was an extremely fast 2 days but I had a blast and saw so many of my friends. I didn't have the out come that I was hoping for but the rabbits did amazing. I didn't get very many pictures at all because I was way too busy showing rabbits. I guess next time I need to take my own Photographer. Lol! I want to say Congratulations to my friends that have all stepped out of that comfort zone for the first time. These families did amazing. I also want to say Congratulations to my friends who have been showing for a while.

Did have several rabbits come home with new legs. Won some classes, no Best of Breed, buy did get Best Opposite S*x Breed with a home grown Californian named Pay Check. Then in the Mini Rex. Tomas (Castor) won 3 Best of Variety, Best of Group, 1 Best Opposite S*x Variety, and 1 Best Opposite S*x Group. Petunia (Castor) won 1 Best of Variety, 1 Best of Group, 3 Best Opposite S*x Variety, and 3 Best Opposite of Group. Plus, won some other class.

Tonight was a great Meat pen show at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. There was 3 kids from Curry County. For 2 of them it didn't go in there way but they both left the table with a smile on their faces. Super proud of Hadley Riley and Chester Weese.

So the Bun-Be-Leaf-Able Youth Jackpot was a success!! There were 83 entries and a lot of fun. We want to say Thank you to our sponsors! Creighton's Town & Country, One-Stop Feed, and Hops A Lot Farms. The workshop was very informative Thanks to Amanda White, Kara Davis Hillis, and Becca Noggler. Our judge Liz Beason was great! We also had some amazing awards Thanks to Dixi Burnett and Joann Love. Congratulations to all the exhibitors and a special Thank you to all the parents & Grandparents for getting the kids there.

This was written by John Terry in a comment on one of our posts that i felt should be directly shared in its own. He has been a judge and breeder with several years of experience under his belt along side his wife MaryJo Terry who is an ARBA judge herself, so i value both of their advice and have utilized it in my own rabbits. Both are extremely dedicated to the youth and honest as well as gives some very excellent words of wisdom as shown in this small piece of experience and wisdom. In the future of this group, I am hoping that i can get with them and some other judges as well as long time breeders with decades of experience under their belts to be able to write more educational pieces to provide the knowledge to everyone in this brutal world of rabbits and what it takes to raise them.. Because when you hear... oh rabbits are the easiest livestock projects to raise!!!.. NOPE, that is a big fat lie because they aren't easy one bit to raise. So i leave this piece here for you to read and think upon because its just part of the cold hard truth of what is happening and there is no better way to say it.

The Facebook rabbit world have been in chaotic state for some time. Let start with breeders rabbits. Breeders are being sold like use cars. What you don’t know or can’t see it on the buyers hands. Buyers beware. Judging these shows we find a wide range of animals that are not even a recognize breed and find out there was a very hefty price paid for that unrecognized animals. Sickening to tell kid there year long project is shot right out of the gate. How do we fix this. Education. Read the standard. Don’t start a fb hate club. Ops information group. Don’t start a support group. You can’t stop the use car salesman from selling but you can stop the yourself buying from them. And you do that with knowledge. Mom, dads , teacher, ag agent , anyone who is involve in a child getting a project need to have knowledge. Or they need to find someone that does. Everyone of us know a reputable rabbit person that can be trusted. How that person get so smart. Years of breeding and knowing the standard. I personally had to argue with a breeder at a county show just the other day about Bob tail rabbit. He would rather turn a blind eye to his problem rather than fix it.
2nd thing is the animals getting proper care. I would guess 30 percent of the animals I see on the table are not being fed watered or handled right. Watching the kids removing their animals from the table show just how good of care. Alot of factors in raising animals. Rabbit will die if you look at them wrong. You have to be honest with yourself did those animals get the best care. Judging by the 30 percent that are sub par to the winners I would say not.

Meat pens. Yes we need knowledge here too. Here a fun topic. We all know what meat pens are. But what do we not know. We don’t know how the animals will grow under the new care. Water feed and new location is a shock factor for s small animals that is required to grow fast in next 4 weeks. Mom and dads and who ever involve need to take correct measure to clean and sanitize the cages at the county barn that are housing the new buns. Or even at the house. Cages need to be replaced if they are not properly maintain. Putting rabbits in cages that house chickens Turkey and the occasional rodent is only asking for trouble. May not get you the first time but it will play out down the road. Not even gonna get started in the feeding of rabbit.

Vetting meat pen breeders hmmmm. is that new way of saying how do we find someone else to blame. Wait wait you looking for the best project for your kid or get the best bang for your buck. Everyone of the meat pen breeders post fb pic of their winnings. The real solution If you want to fix problem is set up a back yard project and grab you some does and a buck and raise your kids project. Teach them what you both learn. Get your hand in the game. That is the whole reason we have meat pen breeders because no one want to do the work. They only want a 4 week project. 4 weeks and you wonder why it the fastest growing project out there. It not as easy as you think to raise animals. But to put them on a time line or being born and them keeping them alive for the first 6 week. Those who raise rabbit know average loss of kits is 20 -40 percent or higher in fist two weeks. I could keep going. But I got to go judge a show. Just my way of looking.
