Hillcrest Park Zoo and our very own Sooner the Tiger would like to wish you a happy Global Tiger Day!

Global Tiger Day is celebrated every year on July 29th to raise awareness about this extraordinary big cat. Although they are absolutely magnificent, they are also endangered.

Over the last 30 years, the world's tiger population has seen a 50% decline. That leaves less than 2,500 Bengal Tigers remaining in the wild. Sooner, the Royal Bengal Tiger, can be found here in Clovis at your very own Hillcrest Park Zoo.

Last but definitely not least on our National Zookeeper Week is our very own senior zookeeper, Tayli!
Tayli is our primary carnivore keeper and has been here over a year.
She trains our tiger Sooner, our bears Bailey and Willow, and our caracals George and Sugar! She is also the primary keeper for our kangaroos, wallabies, spider monkeys, and our otter!
If you see Tayli around the zoo, give her a great big thank you!

On this wonderful morning of National Zookeeper Week, we would like to thank our next zookeeper, Franco, for everything he does! Franco is the primary keeper for animals like the Hyena, Elk, Coati, and even our very own Jericha the giraffe!
Catch Franco training Jericha in her yard or letting Scarlett the Coatimundi "hang" around just like in this absolutely perfect picture!

He is the primary keeper and trainer for all of our of birds at Hillcrest Park Zoo. You will probably catch Ryan having a conversation with our macaws Paco, Colonel, or Rambo! If you see Ryan out and about, give him a big thank you!

Up next on our National Zookeeper Week is Joe with his best friend Alexander Camelton! Joe is the primary keeper for the Crane, Capybara, Foxes, Wolf, Lemur, and Camel!

If you try to find Joe at the zoo, he probably will be hanging out with his two fox friends Hawk and Falcon. He loves to train all his animals and as you can see by Alexander's smile, the animals love him as well!

Hillcrest Park Zoo will be highlighting the five amazing keepers that help take care of all our wonderful animals!

Kicking it off strong is Hanna! She is the best reptile keeper out there! Catch her in the reptile house or education center showing off her scaly friends!

Hillcrest Park Zoo's very first ever Christmas in July weekend is kicking it off with Adult Night 21+ on Friday, July 19th.

Roosevelt Brewery and Enchantment Vineyards will be joining us for a night of Christmas lights and Christmas music!
There will be food trucks as well!

The night does not end there! Red Door will be hosting a Christmas in July AFTER PARTY! There will be Christmas themed drinks and many decorations!

It's time to name the new baby camel! 🐫

Camel naming bids will only be taken via an online form available at https://www.cityofclovis.org/Camel/. For questions about the form or assistance filling it out, please call the City Manager’s Office at (575) 763-9670.

Bids will be taken between 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2024, until 4:00 p.m., Saturday July 5, 2024.

The naming rights to the female camel will be awarded to the HIGHEST BIDDER at the time of the bid closing.

Payment is due to the City of Clovis no later than one week after the bid closing, which is 4:00 p.m., Friday, July 12, 2024.

🩷 Bidders have the right to withdraw their bid at any time during the bid period or if the City of Clovis refuses the proposed name.
🩷 All proceeds of the contest will benefit the Hillcrest Park Zoo.
🩷 The proposed names must be provided to the City of Clovis at the time of the bid.
🩷 The City of Clovis reserves the right to refuse/reject any name deemed inappropriate.

Today, we celebrate these adorable, playful, and incredibly intelligent creatures that bring joy to our rivers, lakes, and oceans. Otters are not only cute but also vital to the health of our ecosystems. 🏞️💧

Did you know?

- Otters have a dense fur coat with up to a million hairs per square inch! 🧥
- They use tools, like rocks, to crack open shellfish. 🪨
- There are 13 species of otters around the world, each with unique behaviors and habitats. 🌍
- Unfortunately, many otter species face threats from habitat loss, pollution, and poaching. Today is a reminder of the importance of protecting these wonderful animals and their environments.

Can I bring food and drinks into the Zoo? You may bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks into the Zoo. Glass bottles are discouraged, as broken glass presents a danger to visitors, staff, and animals. You may not bring in alcohol. Happy Birthday, Daisy!

Happy birthday to Daisy, our North American bison! 🌼 Some may see our bison and think they are buffaloes. However, there are differences between buffaloes and bison. Bison are native to North America, while buffaloes are native to Africa and Asia.

Our bat-eared fox encounter is available on Wednesdays & Saturdays to visitors 8 years and older. Did you know? A male fox is called a dog, a female is a vixen, and babies are called kits or pups.

Hillcrest Park Zoo is the second-largest zoo in the state. A must-see for animal lovers. Clovis, New Mexico – closer to wild.

Our Bat-eared fox encounter is available on Wednesdays & Saturdays to visitors 8 years and older. Did you know? Bat-eared fox’s extremely large ears can grow up to 14 cm (nearly 6 inches) in length and those ears certainly are not only handy for providing an early alert to near-by predators, but it’s ears are also keenly sensitive and are able to pick up the movements of small bugs and lizards. Rotating it’s ears independently to pinpoint the exact location of prey, ears of the bat-eared fox can detect a termite chewing on short grasses or a beetle larva burrowing underground!

A robust enrichment program is essential to provide physically and mentally stimulating items, activities, and environments for all the zoo's animals. Many of these encourage natural behaviors and provide complex thought processes. Here's our Caracal enjoying a piece of recycled playground equipment with added scents. May not be an item that requires alot of thought process, but the Caracal sure is having fun. We are in the process of adding some new enrichment items into our program. Did you know that the barns at the Hillcrest Park Zoo are equipped with auto-fillers. As the animals drink, the bowl tips slightly.... filling with fresh water all day long. The zookeepers clean out the bowls twice a day to ensure the bowl remains free of dirt. Explore your wild side at the Zoo today!

Night time activities 😂... A wipeout by Queso and a perfectly timed jump over him by Pickle. Hiccup is garbage can jumping 🏆 Champion 😂

Late night shenanigans 🤣! Our commissary floor is being replaced, so everything was moved over to the infirmary side. This has become the latest favorite night time activity.. climb all over and get into everything! NOTHING is safe.. except for supervisor Cola Kitty. Smart girl took to higher ground, lol!
