National Mutt Day is celebrating our mixed-breed pup friends! Mixed-breed dogs can be some of the most amazing animals, because they embody the good qualities of each breed their mix includes. There are so many who shop for purebred animals these days. Faithful Friends firmly supports adopting animals over shopping. We believe in the love of mixed-breed dogs, who often face stigma and remain in shelters far longer than their purebred counterparts. We love our mixed-breed animals and hope you’ll find love in your heart for one of your own, as well!

National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week was established in 1996 by the Humane Society of the United States. Animal shelters and rescues work so hard to find homes for the many animals they take in each day. We appreciate the work our rescue volunteers and shelter employees do for our community. If you’re thinking about getting a pet, please consider getting one from the animal shelter or one of our local rescues! If you adopted a rescue, show us a photo of your pet and tell us one thing you love the most about them!

Cats make excellent companions. We celebrate National Cat Day to bring awareness to the vast number of cats and kittens in our local shelter and rescues. Cats come with as many personalities as they do coats and colors! They will rub up against your leg and you’ll fall in love. Charles Dickens once said, “What greater gift than the love of a cat.” And we agree!

Preserving reptile natural habitats is incredibly important to aid in conservation efforts. There are nearly 10,000 species of reptiles around the world. These surprisingly intelligent animals can be surprisingly affectionate and beautiful. If you have a reptile, post a picture below and tell us about your furless friend!

Today is Pet Obesity Awareness Day!! Faithful Friends wants you to know that animals with weight concerns can lose 2.5 years of their lifespan! They are also prone to more health problems when they are carrying around extra weight. Don't worry though, friends! It isn't too late. Veterinarians suggest to reduce calories in your pet's diet. This can be done with low-calorie pet food, less treats, etc. Taking them for walks, playing and getting them physically active will also help with their weight management.

October is Adopt-a-Shelter Dog Month! There are so many sweet loves that need to be adopted from our local rescues and shelter. The rescues and High Plains Humane Society have worked hard to ensure these animals have their vaccines, and will even work with you to make sure the animal is properly sterilized. So, if you're in the market for a precious pawed friend, please consider adopting! They need love and a forever home, and yours is the perfect one!

Today is World Rabies Day! It is celebrated annually to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease. Today, safe and effective animal and human vaccines are among the important tools that exist to eliminate human deaths from rabies while awareness is the key driver for success of communities to engage in effective rabies prevention. Please vaccinate your animals! We don't want to have to see them prematurely because they contracted a disease that could've been prevented!
