** 📖 PAW-SITIVE STORY TIME! 📖 **
MPK-ers,
I have one heck of a story to tell you… and unlike some of the negativity that gets blasted all over social media at the drop of a hat, THIS is a story that makes me happy to share - as a dog owner and a boarding kennel operator.
Last Sunday, when the MPK staff got back to the kennel for the afternoon shift, one of our staff quickly noticed that a dog who was boarding with us - we’ll call him “Titan” - was seeming more lethargic than usual. He’d been with us for a few days (and had stayed previously at MPK), and he didn’t get up from his nap to greet us as he usually does. She immediately alerted Julie who came to check-out the situation. Titan didn’t want to stand up, and upon checking his gums, Julie immediately noticed that they were white (instead of pink) and cold to the touch. Knowing that these were signs of a serious issue, Julie rushed Titan to the Animal Emergency Center.
Upon arrival, a blood test showed that his platelet count was dangerously low and a radiograph showed that his spleen was not getting the proper blood flow. The AEC told Julie that they wanted to monitor Titan overnight, and we should plan to come back on Monday morning.
So, we did the sisterly tag-team switch, and I went to get him Monday morning where the absolutely phenomenal staff at the AEC told us that he had done well overnight, that his platelet count was rising, but that they felt like more advanced imaging of his spleen needed to be done - and referred us to Kimberly Crest Veterinary Hospital. He and I took an uneventful drive across town and met with Kimberly Crest, who did their own initial evaluation and decided to keep him during the day to monitor the situation. (Obviously, both Julie & I and the veterinarians were in touch with Titan’s owners during this entire ordeal.)
Late Monday, the update was that Titan’s platelet count had continued to increase (good news!), his spleen still looked a little funny on imaging but was improving (good news!), and that his heart was having an arrhythmia (not so good news). So, I put my bus-driver hat back on and took Titan back across town to the AEC to spend Monday night there hooked up to an EKG machine.
Again, Tuesday morning, we did the sisterly tag-team switch, and Julie went to get Titan at the AEC to take him back to Kimberly Crest for the day to receive additional imaging and heart monitoring. And you will not believe the call we got from the vet after lunchtime Tuesday….
…. The vet believes that our staff at MPK caught Titan right in the midst of a probable splenic torsion, which means that his spleen was in the process of twisting, much like when the stomach bloats. If we wouldn’t have been attentive to how he was feeling and rushed him to the vet right away, this twist would have cut off blood flow to his spleen and this story could have had a much different ending. But…. Titan is ALIVE, continually improving, and resting PEACEFULLY back at MPK tonight until his owners return tomorrow!!!
I want to tell you this story for a few reasons:
1. I am SO INCREDIBLY PROUD of the responsible, attentive, hard working staff that we have at MPK. They are unmatched in their knowledge and care for the animals who board with us.
2. Julie and I are beyond thankful to have OUTSTANDING veterinarians in this community to help us navigate the animal health world. I cannot say enough about the respect and admiration we have for those vet’s and the care teams at the Animal Emergency Center of the Quad Cities and Kimberly Crest Veterinary Hospital & Specialty Services, just to name a few.
3. We want to share the good things about our industry! Like I said at the beginning, it is so easy to share negative stories, bad experiences, or mistakes on social media when the stories that end happily are hardly ever shared. This is our attempt to spread the good!!!
Thank you to the vets who are willing to help us as kennel owners, knowing that we are the temporary paw-rents to these animals. Thank you to our A+ staff (Kat in this particular situation!) for your keen observation and timely communication.
Julie & I love MPK, the fur babies who stay with us, our loyal customers, and the MPK staff who show-up for the dogs every. single. day.
❤️ ~ Blair
