For all you localvores out there it’s garlic scape time. Chop or sauté garlic scapes into frittatas, omelets, or your scrambled eggs. You can swap thinly sliced garlic scapes for scallions. Or of course you can make pesto. They will only be around for a short time so try they them out now. You can order online for pickup at www.crandallfarms.com or www.qcfarmersmarket.online. I’ve never really thought about it but even nettles have pollen.

The bees came through the winter strong. Should be a good year.

Honeybees are amazing creatures but they can’t predict the weather. This swarm will have to endure the rain until tomorrow when I’ll put them in a new hive.

Watch closely and you’ll see bees bringing in pollen on their legs. Its always a sign of a healthy hive seeing pollen coming into the hive.

We created this video last spring. Hopefully it will help some new beekeepers with installing their packages of bees.

You can’t beekeep in the Quad Cities without a little (or a lot of) flooding.
