These two guardians mistook a woman's small dog, near their property as a threat, and killed it. They were trying to do their job and do not deserve euthanasia.

This is a great article on what a good LGD/livestock bond looks like, types of guarding styles, and bonding/training philosophy.

We find both herdbound types of individuals and perimeter/patrolling dogs among our Akbash. We balance bonding with the livestock from day 1, with daily handling/training that we do out with the stock where the dogs/pups live.

While we know many farms need a good guardian dog, I am not a big fan of shipping dogs across the country. Therefore I am happy to pass along this news from our friends at South Of Eden Farms in Tennesee. So for any of you on the Eastern side of the country this is an excellent batch of pups from proven working parents. Not Akbash....but a good crossing of great LGDs just the same. Pups were born yesterday. ♡

We've received a number of requests for puppies from Dakota's upcoming litter. We are working through those requests to separate the serious buyer from those who are not ready.

If you're considering a pup from us, please check out our website for more information on this litter and stayed tuned for snuggly puppy pics!

Our newest litter from Juno and Fenris. These pups are beautiful, smart, and have a brilliant future as LGDs. We are very excited about this new breeding between Juno and Fen. This is both Juno and Fen's first litter and they make a great match.

Using Coyotes to Protect Livestock. Wait. What?

If you have wondered about the effectiveness of using livestock guardian dogs vs. trapping or poisoning coyotes and other predators, check this out. It's a fascinating article on published research indicating that the use of environmentally friendly predator control like like livestock guardian dogs, actually can "teach" coyote packs to leave livestock alone. And that leaving those predators in the environment, that have "learned" livestock is not viable food, prevents other predators from moving into an area.

Livestock losses are an unfortunate reality of ranching and the use of traps and snares is a common way to attempt to reduce predator-livestock conflict. However, one USDA study (Shivik et al. 2003) noted that for many types of predators, there is a paradoxical relationship between the number of pre...

One of the great strengths of livestock guardian breeds is that they cooperate to protect the herd and take out predators. Perhaps because they have not been bred so much for the pet industry, they have stayed closer to their ancestral roots behaviorally. I think its pretty likely most of our paired dogs would pass this cooperation test.

In a widely used behavioral experiment that requires teamwork, wolves showed up dogs.

We are excited to announce that we just added a beautiful female pup from Utah breeder Paula Rollins and a beautiful male pup from Texas breeder Barney Fowler, to our farm for our future breeding program. Pictures and names of the new pups will come in the next few days.

People ask me if our pups are used to being around children. The answer is always a resounding YES. We believe our dogs should be ready to protect all kinds of creatures including human kiddos. Here are two of our farm girls (human and canine) lounging in the grass together after chores.

With heavy hearts tonight we say goodbye to Apollo. He was one of our oldest, most reliable livestock guardians, and served as a wise old mentor to so many pups as they grew up on our farm. He served us protecting our farm fiercely and faithfully for long over a decade. He passed quietly in his sleep in the barn where he was happiest. Rest in peace old man. Thank you for so many years of quiet devotion.

Livestock Guardian Dogs - Working on Common Ground

This is a great video about LGDs. Environmentally friendly predator control. Not meant to kill, but to deter predators. It doesn't talk about Akbash specifically, but in my opinion they are a pretty happy medium between the "white dogs" (Pyrenees, Maremma) and the Kangal/Anatolians.

Ranchers who struggle to coexist with large predators are finding new hope in old dog breeds. While these Old World livestock guardian dog breeds have successfully…
