Show horses, horses that travel, or horses boarded where other horses are regularly shipped should be vaccinated for Equine Influenza (Flu) and Rhinopneumonitis (Rhino) every 6 months.

The FEI requires that horses have been vaccinated for influenza within 6 months and 21 days of competition and USEF requires horses be vaccinated for influenza within 6 months of competition. Vaccination dates are included in the FEI passport and signed by your veterinarian. For USEF, the vaccination dates are generally included on a health certificate provided by your veterinarian.

On the left was the day that we injected PRP (images are from before the injection was performed) and the picture on the right is 60 days post injection followed by low energy shockwave, and two months of class IV laser therapy. 👏

Vaccines are an important part of the routine health care that the performance and race horses in our practice receive. Vaccinations are given based on AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) guidelines and recommendations from our veterinarians after review of the horses history and risk factors. This can include but is not limited to many factors such as:

🔹 Geographical location (What environmental risk factors is the horse exposed to in the local area or when traveling south, to horse shows, or abroad)
🔹 Importation (Has the horse recently been imported from another country or area of the country which would require a series of booster vaccinations?)
🔹 Horse show/ race track requirements (There are vaccination requirements that must be met for horses competing or racing.)
🔹 Health status (vaccinations may or may not be given based on the current health status of the horse or history of vaccine reaction.)

This is not an exhaustive list but an example few of the considerations we use when we are vaccinating our patients.

What a picture perfect weekend at Plantation Field Horse Trials. Congratulations to all our clients who had a successful and safe weekend in the $40,000 Brooke USA CCI4*-S. 🤩

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a physiotherapy treatment that helps improve and restore normal muscle function and provide pain relief. This has useful application for injury and pain but also can be used for horses that are rehabbing from distal limb injuries to help maintain a healthy top line. The FES system is usually used on the back, SI, and neck but has other applications that we have used in physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Ever wonder what the difference between shock waving and lasering is? Dr. Amber Boss gives us the run down on both of the procedures and what they are best used for!

Routine performance exams are a large part of the services that we provide to our sport horse patients. By performing routine exams our vets have a better chance at helping you keep your horse feeling their best when competing and training.

HIRING 🚨 Sports Medicine Associates is seeking a motivated and mature individual to join their team as a full time veterinary technician. The job entails assisting our doctors with a variety of examinations and procedures at the clinic and on the farm. Other job responsibilities will include daily cleaning, stocking vehicles, uploading images, light office work, and other tasks assigned as necessary. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a great group of dedicated veterinarians, staff, and clientele. The position also offers the perk of traveling to our winter base in Aiken, South Carolina. Applicants must be comfortable handling and restraining horses, however no previous veterinary technical experience is required.
