Meet our technician Jessica’s dog Peggy! Peggy is a 12 year old Pomeranian mix who is enjoying life to the fullest! One ingredient that helps her run and play like a pup everyday is a medication called Librela.

Librela is a medication that treats pain associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. It's the first and only FDA-approved monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy for this purpose in the United States! Librela is a subcutaneous injection given at the clinic. Some dogs may see a decrease in pain within a week of the first dose, but it may take until after the second dose for the full effects to be noticeable.

Multiple staff members in our facility use this treatment on their pets, showing you that they trust and believe in it. We have success stories like Peggy to show it off. 💕
If you have questions we are here for you. Or you can just enjoy these marvelous photos of Peggy 🐾

Meet Chewie! This adorable guy is at Island Animal Hospital for a neuter procedure today. Being neutered has health benefits and can provide protection against some potentially serious diseases. Spaying female dogs and cats can prevent uterine infection and reduce the risk of breast cancer. Neutering males can eliminate their risk of testicular cancer and reduce their risk of developing enlarged prostate glands (known as benign prostatic hyperplasia).

While both spaying and neutering are major surgical procedures, they are also the most common surgeries performed by veterinarians on cats and dogs. Our veterinarians can recommend a surgical plan specially tailored to your pet's needs. Before the procedure, your veterinarian will thoroughly examine your pet to ensure they're in good health. General anesthesia will be used to keep your pet comfortable and asleep during the surgery, and medications will be given to minimize pain during and after. After surgery, you'll be asked to keep your pet calm and quiet for a few days, as the incision heals.

When it comes to dogs, there is no one-size-fits-all recommendation. The optimal timing of spaying or neutering is as individual as your pet. Consult with our veterinarians, who can help you decide based on your dog's breed, age, s*x, personality, role (e.g., pet or working dog), home environment, and health status. We are always here for you!

Throughout the summer, we get questions about pets + hot cars! Our graphic addresses the danger of leaving a pet in a hot car & what to do if you spot one.

We understand that for many, there’s a first instinct to smash a window & rescue a pet. Believe us, we get that! It’s also important for pet lovers to be informed & understand the legal side of this situation. In our latest blog, we’re sharing Minnesota laws & police protocols for “pet in hot car” scenarios, as well as advice for Good Sams. We are beginning the hot pavement phase of the year. Just a friendly reminder to always check how hot the ground is before walking your furry friend on pavement.

A rabies alert has been issued by the Florida Department of Health-Brevard for West Melbourne/Palm Bay area due to a racoon that tested positive. Since rabies is present in the wild animal population, domestic animals are at risk if not vaccinated.

The alert is in effect for 60 days.

What was our CVT Justina’s favorite part about attending the veterinary conference in Orlando?

“At VMX this year my main concentration was on anesthetic safety on pets. As advancements in medical care for animals continues and new medications are being discovered, it is just amazing what veterinary medicine is capable of.
Pet owners may not realize why we do certain diagnostics to prepare your pet for an anesthetic procedure. When you think about it, it is a lot like what you or I would go through. For instance, pre-anesthetic labwork helps us determine customed pre-operational medications and alerts us of any abnormalities to watch, what systems are best for your pet under anesthesia, what pain medication to administer to keep them comfortable and painless. The patients are consistently monitored with heart rate monitors, blood pressure monitors, end-tidal C02 monitor, ECG’s, capnograph, oxygen support, thermal regulation, etc., but most importantly a trained professional and advocate there 24/7 when they are in our facility.
It is always exciting to continue learning and being able to provide the best care to our patients. Their safety is just as important to us as it is to you.” - Justina
