This month is National Pet Dental Health Month!!
This was started to encourage pet owners to be proactive about their pets’ dental health.
Without routine dental care, pets develop periodontal disease, which causes smelly breath 😮💨, infected gums 😷 and tooth loss 🦷. At its later stages, it can even spread infection to the kidneys, liver and heart.
Keep your pets’ teeth healthy by scheduling their annual dental cleanings and brushing their teeth at home!

The Skinny on Overweight Pets
Losing weight seems to be on just about every other person’s to-do list for the new year—but humans aren’t the only ones with an excess poundage problem. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Just like people, when pets are overweight, they’re more likely to develop diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, joint injuries, and cancer.
The fact is that well-loved pets are often too-well-fed pets. Your veterinarian can help you figure out what diet is best for your pet, as well as how much to feed. Here are some other helpful tips for regulating your pet’s food intake and activity:
🎾 Measure your pet’s food to make sure you’re not overfeeding
🎾 Place food into toys that require interaction with your dog or cat to receive a food reward (food puzzle).
🎾 Hide kibble around the house so that your cat must hunt for food, or put it high on a kitty tree
🎾 Spread meals out throughout the day (but make sure the total amount fed for the day is the correct amount)
🎾 Play with your cat or dog using love and attention, not treats
If you’re concerned about your pet’s weight or have questions about feeding and exercise, don’t hesitate to schedule an exam online or call us at 321-406-1618.

January is Train Your Dog Month!
If you’re looking to start the new year off on the right paw with your pet, here are a few basic training strategies to help you both have a better new year.
🐶 Got a problem barker? It’s a pretty common issue, but you’ve got to be consistent and patient if you want to make it stop. First, yelling back at your dog just makes him think you’re joining in on the fun. Instead. Calmly say “Quiet!” and reward your pet when he stops barking. It might take him a while to get it, but eventually most dogs do.
🐶 Does your dog walk you? Leash-pulling not only ruins walks, but it can be dangerous for both you and your pooch. Start by playing “follow me” with your dog: While holding the leash, take a few steps backward and when the dog turns and follows you, say “yes!” and immediately reward her. There are many types of corrective harnesses available to help with this problem–it’s just a matter of finding the one that is right for your dog.
🐶 Is your dog hyperactive and unruly? Chances are he or she isn’t getting enough exercise and/or mental stimulation. When you adopt a pet, it’s crucial to choose one that fits your lifestyle in terms of energy and time. Puppies are almost irresistible, but they usually require lots of consistent training and exercise in order to become a well-behaved family member. In addition to making sure your pet is getting enough activity, it’s important not to reward the behavior by giving in to it with positive or negative responses.
Keep in mind that training and learning is something that takes time and patience, and continues throughout a dog’s lifetime. Follow this link for more basic online training tips, and remember–if your dog starts to have a behavior problem, it’s important to rule out a medical cause first. Give us a call at 321-406-1618 and we’ll be happy to advise and help!

Happy New Year! 🎊 This new year comes with an important announcement.
Just like people, dogs can get the flu—known as canine influenza, or CIV. Also just like people, the more social the individual, the greater the risk of contracting the virus. Dogs that interact with other dogs at daycare, grooming, dog parks, or who are regularly groomed are much more likely to be exposed.
There are two highly contagious strains of the virus—H3N2 and H3N8—and no dog is immune. Over the last year, CIV was reported in 46 states, including Florida. Symptoms of CIV include:
* coughing
* fever
* sneezing
* lethargy
* eye discharge
* reduced appetite
In elderly dogs and those with compromised immune systems or pre-existing respiratory conditions, CIV can lead to secondary infections and even death.
Preventing exposure through vaccination is crucial, especially for senior dogs and those with chronic illness. We carry a bivalent vaccine that protects against both strains of the virus, and we strongly encourage you to have your dog vaccinated if he or she will be in contact with other dogs.
Have questions or need to make an appointment to get your pet vaccinated? Call us at 321-406-1618.

Fireworks are a common way to ring in the new year. Help your pets stay calm.
When you expect firework noise (whether in your community or over a televised event), give pets comfy places to hide, and play calming music or white noise to help distract them.
There are numerous options for treating noise aversion, and we can help you find the right one in time for the New Year’s festivities. Give us a call tomorrow if you have any questions at 321-406-1618.

Ocean Animal Hospital has been a staple in the Cocoa Beach community for some time now. It was originally founded by veterinarian, Dr. Dave Capraro in 2008. Known by all as Dr. Dave, he was a personable and caring man who embodied unconditional love for others animals. As 2017 saw the unfortunate passing of Dr. Dave, Ocean Animal Hospital’s staff and doctors continued to serve a grieving community and their pets.
Our staff will ensure that his legacy will never be forgotten.
Jump to present day Ocean Animal Hospital- we continue to serve Brevard county and love everyday of it. In September 2018, Dr. Gabe Young and his wife Angie, came to call the Space Coast their home. Dr. Gabe attended veterinary school in New Zealand, completing his veterinary degree in 2008. Since then, he’s worked as a small animal veterinary surgeon in Maui, Colorado, New Zealand, Australia, Bahrain, and Qatar. He has also done extensive veterinary volunteer work in The Cook Islands, Samoa, and Fiji. As a native Floridian, Dr. Gabe is an avid surfer, likes playing the drums, is fond of traveling to new destinations, and enjoys quality time with his family.
Ocean Animal Hospital’s detailed-savvy nurses, coupled with Dr. Gabe’s knowledge create a timely and educational experience for all clients. We are a dedicated staff that strive to ensure your pet receives the best veterinary care. We here at Ocean Animal Hospital love what we do, and have years of combined experience to enforce that. Please call our office or simply stop by if you have any questions.
We look forward to seeing you and your fur baby soon!
