I was raised on a farm in Kansas where our closest neighbor was over a mile away. I rode my horse from sunrise to sunset. My mom only knowing I was in the general 2-5 mile vicinity on my horse somewhere. My dad raised me to care for my dogs and horses on my own. I fed them 2x a day, every day, and attended all veterinary visits. I learned a lot over the years caring for their different ailments.
I’ve loved my own dog since I was 7 years old. I was active in 4H with my dog Spify. One year, we were the Grand Champion in Off Leash Obedience in Miami County and advanced to the Kansas State Fair where we earned a First Place. As different pups came into my life, I always enrolled them in an obedience class taught by the local vet or at Petco and Petsmart. I learned several different training techniques. I use positive reinforcement and try to set my dogs up for success, not failure. I give lots of love and praise at the exact moment of their success to ensure they understand the behaviors I desire.
I was transferred to Florida while working for CenturyLink in 2011. I worked in Apopka making the dreaded drive on what seemed like every highway in Orlando. I’ve always drove an hour to work in Kansas City, but had no idea how much more traffic there would be in Orlando! After a year, I was laid off for downsizing. No one needed a landline anymore and cuts started happening. I had survived several layoffs while working for Spring and the CenturyLink job was a spin off from my position at Sprint. I was ready for my time and welcomed the severance package I had earned after 11 years with Sprint/CenturyLink. I had just bought my home on Lemon Street as a foreclosure. The house was in good shape, but the yard was a mess. I spent the next two years, unemployed on purpose, working on fences and cleaning things up.
I knew I never wanted to go back to Corporate America. I tried horseback riding lessons and became a Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor with PATH Intl teaching individuals with special needs how to ride. The connection between the rider and the horse was amazing and I enjoyed all the miracles I witnessed. But physically, I couldn’t handle standing in the Florida heat to teach lessons. One of my students asked if I could watch her dog Mocha while she traveled. Her regular pet sitter had no availability. I said yes and that was the beginning of where I am today.
