Honey loves fetching her bumper from the pool! I try to incorporate my dog’s favorite toys into training, playing and exercise as much as I can. Using toys in dog training is effective because they provide positive reinforcement in a way that many dogs find highly motivating. Toys can engage a dog’s natural instincts for play and prey, making them a powerful incentive. They also help to strengthen the bond between you and your dog by making training sessions enjoyable and interactive. Additionally, using toys as rewards can help keep the dog mentally and physically stimulated, making training sessions more productive and fun.

Bones and Ragnar hanging politely with the ducks and geese. No chasing or aggression allowed!

Training your dog to a high level off-leash is important for several reasons:

Safety: An off-leash trained dog can respond promptly to commands like leave it, come stay, etc. reducing the risk of accidents or dangerous situations. This is crucial in preventing your dog from running into traffic or getting into confrontations with other animals.

Control and Reliability: High-standard off-leash training ensures that your dog will reliably follow commands even without the physical restraint of a leash, making it easier to manage in various environments.

Enhanced Freedom: When your dog is well-trained off-leash, it can enjoy greater freedom to explore and exercise, which is beneficial for its physical and mental well-being.

Improved Bonding: Training fosters a stronger bond between you and your dog, as it builds trust and understanding. This relationship makes off-leash interactions smoother and more enjoyable.

Better Socialization: A well-trained off-leash dog is more likely to behave appropriately around other animals and people, leading to better social interactions.

Overall, off-leash training enhances your dog’s safety, freedom, and quality of life, while also improving your ability to manage and enjoy your time together.

We have off-leash lessons as well as off-leash board & train programs available!

Elle performing a “sit” command. She’s such a beautiful dog!

Teaching your dog to sit is crucial for several reasons:

Foundation for Training: “Sit” is a basic command that lays the groundwork for more advanced training. It helps your dog learn to follow instructions and be responsive to their owners/handlers.

Safety: A dog that knows how to sit is less likely to run away from you and dart into dangerous situations. It’s useful for controlling your dog in busy or potentially risky environments.

Behavior Management: Teaching your dog to sit helps manage their behavior, especially in situations where they might get overly excited or anxious, which often leads to unwanted rude, dangerous or destructive behaviors.

Socialization: A well-trained dog is more comfortable and well-mannered around other people and animals, leading to better social interactions.

Strengthens Bond: Training your dog helps build a strong, trusting relationship between you and your pet, enhancing communication and understanding.

Overall, teaching your dog to sit is a fundamental skill that benefits both the dog and the owner.

This is an exercise I do with all my personal dogs as well as all of my board& train dogs and teach all of my private lesson clients. I call it “I sit, you chill”!
It is amazing at teaching dogs to calm down, hang out with their owners and refrain from doing anything that could get them into trouble.
Once trained to a “default” behavior in and around the house it can be quickly transitioned to public settings like the park or dog friendly restaurant!
Ever see a service dog sitting/laying politely next to their owners? THIS IS HOW THEY GOT THAT WAY!
We’re currently booking private lessons and board & train programs, DM us or call/text Matt at 9543055897.

Bennie Update: I Sit You Chill exercise ✅

To the untrained eye this just looks like a dog laying down while the owners eat but what Bennie IS doing isn’t as important as what he IS NOT doing.

While Bennie is laying down on the floor calmly next to his owners he is not begging for their food, drinking out of toilets, dumpster diving in the trash, counter surfing, barking out the windows, chewing furniture, peeing and pooping in the back room, to name just a tiny portion of a looong list of unwanted/problematic behaviors that untrained dogs can perform on a daily basis.

Instead Bennie is performing a voluntary Down/stay next to his owners (an exercise we practice called I Sit You Chill) while they eat breakfast.

We practice this exercise a lot in the beginning of training until it becomes a default behavior like you see here.

This allows the owner to focus more on enjoying breakfast without needing to focus on Bennie almost at all!

Sometimes the little things make the biggest improvements!

Training equals more freedom with less chaos.

Our newest board & train student, Rylie, a coonhound x German Shepherd mix. Here for functional obedience she will reliably obey, walking on a loose leash without pulling or reacting aggressively to other dogs, and the of behavior of trying to attack her housemate (when the other dog coughs or makes the sound of vomiting) among a few other things like stealing food off tables and counters and nuisance barking at any movement or sounds outside.
Stay tuned more updates of Rylie to come!
