Question: Do horses take naps?
Answer: Yes! And in the cutest way! ❤🐴
Horses may take a snooze or two when the weather feels just right, and they feel safe enough to do so! As prey animals, the first instinct of a horse is to stand watch...but only if they need to! There are a lot of volunteers and team members that help the EATSF horses reach this amount of Zen! Don't worry, our horses can still see with their fly masks on - it is like a screen over their eyes and ears.
Sleeping in dirt is also preferred because the sun warms it up, and it is a great exfoliant for a back itch that is hard to reach! 😆
Cherokee and Goose love a good Sunday morning snore fest. 😴

Congratulations to our November Volunteer(s) of the Month - Ed and Carla J.
Two volunteers in one month?! It was EATSF's lucky day when Ed and Carla came to their Volunteer Orientation last summer! From leading in classes to helping on committees, and everything in between - these two can always be found at the barn or on a barn Zoom call! ❤🐴
How long have you both volunteered at EATSF?
It has been about 15 months. We saw the Facebook post about orientation!
Why do you like to volunteer at EATSF and what are some things that you do at the organization?
Volunteering is a way to give back because we spent a lot of years in the horse business. It’s a way to use some of our skills and knowledge to help with a fantastic cause. We have been leaders and sidewalkers, we’re part of the Community Engagement committee, we have helped with Ponies and Pints, Coffee and Carrots, Special Olympics, we’re regulars at New Volunteer Orientations (probably because we come as a pair!) and are available for any community events.
Who is your favorite horse at the barn?
Ed and Fire have a special bond. Carla has become especially fond of Lucy, but they are all individually cool with their own personalities and quirks!
What would you say to others to invite them to volunteer with us?
As a volunteer, it’s not really a horse thing. It’s more and much bigger than that. The relationships you develop with the participants and the joy that you see in their faces as they grow and achieve things that they may not be able to achieve anywhere else is so rewarding.
Want to join in the fun with Carla and Ed? Give us a call at 954-974-2007 to see how you can help the EATSF mission! Thank you for all that you do, Carla and Ed - we are always better together! 💪

Beauty came home to EATSF to much fanfare! We are beyond excited to have our sweet girl home. ❤️🐴
Our most heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped to raise funds for her vet visit and ongoing care at EATSF. Because of you, we are just over halfway to reaching our goal! Funds raised have helped to cover her surgery, a portion of her hospital stay, and her after care.

Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida, Inc. (EATSF) was founded in 1982 by Soroptimist International of Boca Raton and the Kiwanis Club of Boca Raton. The organization began as a community project of the Soroptimist women, soon developing into a fully functioning program with the help of the Kiwanis Club of Boca Raton and several other members of the local community. The program began by serving 6 children with special needs on 6 borrowed horses in a public field in Palm Beach County.
Beginning as Horses and the Handicapped of South Palm Beach County in 1982, the organization and its stewards have remained vigilant to the ever-changing special needs community and societal changes. Today, EATSF offers four different programs and has grown to serve more than 100 children and adults with special needs annually through four programs, including: Therapeutic Riding, Hippotherapy, Equine-Facilitated Learning and Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy.
We manage a 5.25-acre campus within Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek that is home to a 12-stall barn, covered riding arena, grazing paddocks and a therapeutic learning center. Our equine programs are executed with the aid of 11 specially trained therapy horses and assisted by more than 300 volunteers, donating more than 10,000 hours of their time and talents. EATSF is a Premier Accredited Center with the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International, placing the organization within the top 25% of therapeutic riding centers around the world.
Our Mission: We are dedicated to providing therapeutic riding and equine-activities to children and adults with special needs so that they may improve physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Our Vision: We envision a place where abilities are strengthened, where activities lead to self-confidence, and each person can experience life without limits.
