We would like to remember a lovely little lady named Keely today! Her story is below, and she is remembered on our Gidgy Tree ❤️

"Allen and Holly Moen adopted Keely when her family moved to Germany in May of 2020. She was 5½ years old and had lost an eye the previous year to cancer. She loved running after bunnies and playing with other dogs, but her best friend and playmate was a 155 # English Mastiff! Keely had the fastest quick step, that was almost as fast as running. She hated car rides, but loved getting to her destination to run around and play. Anyone who met her or walked up to her, was instantly presented with a belly to rub. She left us all too soon in August of 2024, due to the return of cancer."

We would like to remember our wonderful patient Duke, who is memorialized on our Gidgy Tree as well as in the words below written by his family:

Duke! Duke of Earl, that is.

This wonderful Bloodhound was gifted to us when he was 6 months old. This was his 3rd or 4th home in that time. His birth place, pet store in Cheyenne, brought to Cody to no-pet apartment. From there to a friend’s home, where we met him on a visit. That person didn’t really need another dog. When I said, “Oh, he’s BEAUTIFUL! If he ever needs a home, he has one here!”

I was so embarrassed by my outburst!

But a week later we were called, and Duke spent the rest of his life, until almost 11, with us. He was the smartest dog we’ve ever had [and that is saying a lot!], the kindest, goofiest and “soul-matiest” dog ever. Of all of our hounds, he was the best being off leash, even out of sight, he always kept track of US.

Though he was diagnosed with canine lupus at 1 ½. By using a more holistic approach, at my insistence, with Dr. Mel, then later with Dr. Marsh, even more so, he had few complications, and lived much longer than predicted when first diagnosed.

No treatment, including the blown-out knee surgery in his last year, was begrudged. He KNEW, always, we were helping. He didn’t have to wear the cone of shame, ever. Just, “leave it alone, Duke” and he would! He loved everyone, and especially, first Dr. Mel, later Dr. Amanda, and all of the staff.

Their care of him when we couldn’t care for him the week after his knee injury helped him bond even further with them. A gift.

Duke, Duke of Earl, you will ALWAYS be loved and missed. We treasure your memory and all of our times with you.

As is common in the winter holiday season, we have seen a recent resurgence of Kennel Cough cases. Take a minute to read this article, especially if you are considering boarding or grooming this time of year. Here we use the TruCan BAPi intranasal vaccination to cover the Kennel Cough spectrum- please remember it takes a MINIMUM of 4 DAYS to develop sufficient immunity to be protective if exposed to active kennel cough cases!

Kennel Cough in Dogs - Veterinary Partner - VIN

Infectious tracheobronchitis, commonly known as kennel cough, is a complex of infections rather than infection by a single agent. Find out how infection occurs, how serious it may be, how it is treated, and understand the vaccination.

Yellowstone fans that are real horse people got a little confusing information on the Sunday, November 17, 2024 episode. This popular show appears to take pride in its western production on being very authentic - yet some how they had a BIG mistake with treating a horse with intramuscular Banamine.

What is the BIG deal? In this Yellowstone episode a horse was administered Banamine (Flunixin Meglumine) intramuscularly. Yet the nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory is only administered orally (in the mouth) or intravenously (in the vein). Remember Banamine is never recommend to be administered to horses any other way.

Why not? Banamine causes muscle damage when injected intramuscularly! There are spores of bacteria known as clostridium that can rest in healthy muscle; however, the bacteria may awaken if the muscle becomes damaged from an IM injection particularly when Banamine is administered this way. This may cause clostridial myositis - which is a serious and sometimes fatal disease. Post injection signs of a problem would be swelling and a painful injection site with gas underneath the skin. The bacterial toxins may migrate into the bloodstream causing depression, colic, fever and a lose of appetite. Treatment by a licensed DVM is necessary if you make this mistake. Supportive care, antibiotics, and possibly a surgical excision of the infected injected site may be necessary.

This episode of Yellowstone was a good reminder - what is entertaining may not always be real and correct. Check with your equine veterinarian if you are unsure how to administer Banamine.

Over my 13 year career, I have been blessed to work with incredible technicians- they are the heart and soul of every practice I have been apart of. Many times, they are the true unsung heros of everyday in Veterinary Medicine. Words cannot express how blessed I am to have this group of ladies with me in this journey, especially to call them not only colleagues but also best friends.
