Antler Point Gun Dogs

Antler Point Gun Dogs Creating the ultimate hunting dog. Companions in the home - Companions in the field.

Labrador Retrievers have been a part of our family since we were married almost two decades ago. Living in the state of Wyoming, it almost seemed criminal not to have a dog curled up at our feet - especially after we started bring our two-legged pups in to this world. Of course Wyoming is a sportman's paradise from the high country elk and mule deer to the low-land whitetail deer, prairie antelope

, upland game, water fowl and too many lakes streams and rivers full of rainbow, brook, brown and cutthroat trout to mention. The trusty Labrador at our side through the years just seemed to complete our little homemade mountain paradise. Our love and passion for the animals grew as our interests in the outdoors evolved. After getting the chance to hunt over a GSP in an out of town bird hunt - we decided we HAD to have a pointing dog. You can only imagine our excitement when we found out there was such a critter as a pointing Labrador! Although most would classify it as a want - we saw it as a need and introduced Newt, our first pointing Labrador, to the family. Shortly thereafter we found another high country sport that became a passion - shed hunting. During the spring months, there are a plethora of elk and deer sheds in the mountains. And - guess what? Yup, one can train a Labrador to pick up sheds (even sheds buried under the snow). Abby would be our first dog trained to pick up sheds. And of course - through the seasons and high country activities - we had our family at home. This is where our dogs find their most valuable niche in our lives - that of family dog. There is never a time period that we have less than half a dozen dogs at Antler Point - and every one of them are house dogs. They are members of our family. When deciding to breed Labradors - we wanted to create a mission, a vision for what our outcomes of this lifestyle would be. Of course, the primary focus was doing something that would better the Labrador breed. Therefore we pride ourselves in proven blood lines that all have the appropriate health certifications to ensure long and happy lives of our pups and those folks that invite our pups in to their homes. So confident are we at Antler Point Gun Dogs in the health and lines of our puppies that we offer a 24 month health guarantee - and a (pup) lifelong open door to return pup. Finally - we wanted to find a unique niche for our dogs. We decided we would create the jack-of-all-trades pup. Our dogs come from blood lines that point, are strong swimmers, excellent retrievers, shed hunters, upland machines and most importantly - have the disposition and intelligence that will make them a cherished member of your family. In a nut shell, that is the history of where Antler Point Gun Dogs is today. We are growing - and we continue to learn about the breed that we are so passionate about. We sincerely appreciate you stopping by and listening to our story. If there is anything you ever need - and you do not find it on this website or our Facebook or Twitter page - please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you again! Antler Point Gun Dogs

Remember Vader (Deets x Kate)? Vader spent a few weeks with us - training alongside Ash (also Deets and Kate) and Ida (Deets x Crow’s Sage).

Some updated images of Vader - his rookie season in the field.

Thank you, Ted and Tracy for the images! You can definitely tell who his dad is - in appearance AND behavior (Deets too would be crashed after the hunt 😂).

We were asked a question yesterday, and we feel the need to clarify.

Hunting big game animals with dogs in Wyoming is illegal. When we stalk and harvest big game animals … the dogs are not with us.

Much of the video you see is either during the dead time between a morning hunt and evening hunt - or when we are pulling our animals from the field.

We do use our dogs for shed hunting in the high country, and of course - for upland and migratory birds.

We always have a few dogs in camp during elk and deer season. We hunt in heavily populated grizzly country - the dogs are exceptional bear alarms.

This image is an elk retrieve last weekend with the big red dog, “Murphy” and Ida (Deets x Crow’s Sage).

We seem to be totally and completely incapable of these “easy elk” everyone speaks of. 😂

Happy Birthday to the young man with his dog “Bo” (Deets x Kate) in this picture. As hardcore and tough as they come in the mountains. Truly my right hand in the hills, raising and training dogs - in life in general.

Solid, trustworthy and dependable. Proud to be his dad.

Love ya, son!

When you put in the effort - and you spend the countless hours training your pup … and you see them do their job for the very first time. There’s nothing like it.

From Bill and Murphy (Deets x Pitot): Murphy fetched her first waterfowl in the Platte river yesterday! She has been practicing almost every day in the river for several months. She fetched her first pheasant about 2 months ago. She is doing great! She has great drive and energy, along with a love of the water, birds and wildlife in general. She goes for bike rides nearly every day, most often on the river along with frequent swimming and fetching everything from sticks, bumpers and trash in the water. She is a quick learner and enjoys being outdoors no matter the weather. She loves hunting! She has a great nose, good field sense and pays pretty good attention to hand and verbal signals. Overall, she is doing great at 10 months!

Thank you Bill! And Happy Holidays!

Sage is out of one of our original foundation parings of R***r and Sparrow. Brooke comes from River and Tripp (Tripp is also a R***r x Sparrow puppy).

From - “They do! We don’t get to work birds much, haven’t been many. The last time we were able to hunt birds was last Christmas! So Brooke has done amazing. She craves it & is aggressive! Love to watch them work. Both her and Sage are family ❤️ and the off switch and snuggles on the couch when we come inside are pretty great too!”

Always love these report cards. And - we can relate. Big Game hunting dominates our weekends through December. But it is getting to be about that time again!

Thank you for the images, Lora! They look great!

According to Google:
The average success rate for elk hunters is generally considered to be between 10-20%, with most western states falling within this range; however, this can vary greatly depending on the specific hunting area, with some states like Wyoming reporting higher success rates around 40% while others may have rates under 10%

For the last decade - the primary bull and cow elk tags we’ve held we have been blessed to be 100%.

I was thinking about that today after a 1300 foot elevation gain - shot at 0800 back to the truck at 1330.

We know a tremendous amount about the elk we hunt. Study them thoroughly annually. That said - there are a plethora of elk hunters that can say the same thing.

So what is it that sets the higher percentages of kills apart?

We do what most won’t. When we see elk - we pursue them, no matter the terrain or hard work involved.

Of course it doesn’t come at a cost. is judged by his extreme preparations. But he too is in that high percentiles.

We hunt elk for two months - we train for 12.

Ultra marathons - most of which are trail runs.

We don’t speak ill of those who don’t do the same things. Quite the opposite - we have an advantage.

And where we do it - grizzly infested. I was asked at Thanksgiving Dinner by a dear nephew, “where were those fresh grizzly tracks you photographed?”

The answer - “Damn near every trail we walk into the high country.”

The bottom line is - we’ve prepared all year just for the opportunities presented.

In the last 10 years our little hunting party and those friends we invite are responsible for 50 elk kills.

Most of which were atleast five miles in and out.

We’ve been asked by many - “what is the secret of your success?”

It’s basic - but hard. Countless hours on high ridges with good optics - and a drive and work ethic to go get ‘em … no matter where they are.

It’s a passion and a do whatever it takes fire inside.

To us, we feel like we owe it to them - the elk we pursue. We study them - and we work hard to ensure we’re physically up for the task. But we never fool ourselves to believe we are smarter or tougher than them - no one is. That’s elk hunting.

From our family - to you and yours … a Very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving!

Murphy has been a tremendous right hand training Ida (Deets x Crow’s Sage). 14 days total in pursuit of elk - 10 days chasing mule deer … a great socialization head start.

A few more elk - then it’s on to birds - and the true test.

Having experienced dogs to help with new pups is a tremendous asset.

Looks like a great time - congrats all!

The fun thing about this business is hanging out with the “grandpups” - those pups our children have raised. All adults now - maybe children is misleading 🤔.

Each grew up with Labradors - pups in the early years teaching them more than they ever taught them. What a blessed life - the lessons of producing quality animals. Triumph and heart ache - new life and death … I can’t thank those dogs enough for the impact they had on our family.

And here. That’s Bo - yes, he’s named after Bo Nix … he’s a savage. This photo here is one of the last nights in camp - 10 days of the high country in pursuit of elk and deer - excellent socialization.

Bo belongs to eldest son .tristanj - as soon as the big game hunt ends - it’s off to the upland and waterfowl. The work Tristan has done with this pup is incredible. Proud isn’t an adequate word - in our son, in his dog.

This right here is was it’s all about.

I got a quick pose with a celebrity. This dog has already gained notoriety - soon he’ll be famous. Can’t wait to shoot over him, son - outstanding work - this dude is a rockstar!
