Walt Disney almost always had a dog. Growing up on the Disney family farm in Marceline, Missouri, young Walt was followed around by his family's tiny Maltese terrier. When he was in France with the Red Cross, Walt adopted a German Shepherd, who sadly died in the care of friends before Walt could make it back home after his time overseas had ended.

I've told a few stories about Walt's dogs before, like the time Walt surprised his wife, Lilly, with a chow puppy in a hat box on Christmas, and how Walt would enter the family's Holmby Hills home through the kitchen door and would always stop and grab two cold hot dogs from the fridge, one for him and one for his dog. ❤

That particular dog that Walt loved to share hot dogs with was a poodle named Duchess Disney; the family called her DeeDee. DeeDee was Walt's dog. She followed him everywhere he went, including the Disney Studio on weekends. She was a big dog, and Disney Legend John Hench loved to tell the story about the time DeeDee left a, well, a mess on the floor in the main entrance of the studio. John Hench was in a meeting with Walt in a different part of the building when an employee poked his head in and told Walt what had happened. The employee told Walt that a tour group of nuns from the hospital across the street had to lift their habits to walk around the unfortunate scene. Walt responded to the guy with, "My dog? How do they know it wasn't one of the animators?" 😆

When Walt would come home after work in the evenings, he would take the walk down to his barn in the lower level of his backyard. There he would work for hours on his backyard railroad. DeeDee would always accompany him to the barn, then would nudge him after a while, letting him know it was about time to get back to the house for the night. When DeeDee passed away, Walt kept her blanket in her usual spot in his barn. ❤

It's Mr. Angus' birthday! This feisty little Frenchie is like a shot of espresso - small but packs a big punch. With his spicy attitude and driven personality, he's always the alpha of the group. Having witnessed the growth and development of dogs, including those who have been part of the doggy daycare family since its early days, makes their birthdays even more significant. Happy 11th Birthday to the beautiful and age-defying Miss Mischone! I distinctly recall her first doggy daycare visit, where she learned to play and blossomed into a remarkably well-rounded and loving canine companion. As a one-in-a-million companion, she consistently demonstrates her gentle and affectionate nature, touching the hearts of everyone she encounters, including her devoted dad. Let us all come together to wish her a wonderful birthday!

Deep within Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave in France, archaeologists discovered the footprints of an 8-to-10-year-old child preserved in ancient mud, dating back an astonishing 26,000 years. Alongside these human prints were the paw marks of what experts believe to be either a large dog or a wolf, making this the oldest known evidence of a human-canine relationship. The cave, known for its breathtaking Ice Age artwork, offers a rare glimpse into the lives of early humans, suggesting that even in the harsh Upper Paleolithic era, bonds between humans and animals may have already begun forming.

This discovery challenges previous assumptions that human domestication of dogs only began around 15,000 years ago. While it is unclear whether the animal accompanying the child was a domesticated dog or a friendly wolf, the mere presence of their tracks side by side hints at early human-animal interaction. If indeed a dog, this would push back the timeline of canine domestication by thousands of years, showing that early humans may have relied on these animals for companionship, protection, or hunting assistance long before recorded history. The footprints serve as a silent but powerful testament to a bond that would eventually shape human civilization.
