What we’ve learned working in the exotic animal world
It’s not all rainbows and sunshine when working with animals, in actuality, this are much different than people may think.
🐢💔 Think twice before you say goodbye to your pet turtle! Did you know that releasing a pet turtle into the wild can seriously mess with local ecosystems? 🌍 In fact, non-native turtles can outcompete local species, spread diseases, and disrupt food chains. On top of all of that, the survival rate for your “pet” is extremely low. Yikes! Keep your shelled buddy safe and sound at home. If you can’t care for them anymore, consider rehoming or reaching out to a rescue. Let’s protect our wildlife together! 🐢💚 Drop a 🐢 in the comments if you’re a turtle lover!

What’s the true cost of owning a Sulcata Tortoise? The truth is surprising. While you can snag one for just $30-$150, the long-term costs can skyrocket into the thousands! 😱 These guys need a heated winter house, special food, and daily care that really adds up. Did you know that sulcatas can live for 50 years or more? That’s a big commitment! Before you dive in, consider adopting a redfoot, hermans, or a smaller tortoise species instead. They’re just as adorable and way easier on the wallet! Not a throw away pet!

🐢✨ Who else loves the baby tortoise stage? Watching these little cuties learn their way around and develop their own routines is pure joy! Did you know that wild tortoises, especially burrowing species, are creatures of habit? They thrive on routines that help them feel safe and secure. Let’s celebrate these adorable little ones! If you've got a favorite tortoise moment, share it in the comments! And remember, every tortoise deserves a happy home.
Watching this tree go from the size of a pencil, to being large enough to give us some shade has been an amazing experience. She is definitely one of our favorite trees at the 🐢 sanctuary.

Consider a musk or mud turtles when looking into getting a pet, not yellow bellied sliders and red eared sliders. The sliders get far to large, and require at minimum 75 gallons for swimming, although much larger would be best. These are animals, not novelty toys, so please understand what you are getting into before bringing one home. And never release pets turtles into the wild!
