Rattlesnakes are no joke! 🐍

We typically see about 1 case per week during the summer months, which is a lot! Unfortunately, for the dogs that are not vaccinated, rattlesnake bites cause severe systemic reactions and localized tissue inflammation and sloughing. They usually require 3-7 days in the hospital, sometimes more. And unfortunately for some dogs (especially small breed dogs or animals that are bitten in the neck or face) rattlesnake bites can be fatal.

We HIGHLY recommend vaccinating any dog that spends a lot time outdoors, whether that is on a farm, at the lake or campground, or hiking on trails. Schedule your pet’s rattlesnake vaccine appointment today! Call us at (785) 460-1078.

Looking for a new home! 🏠💙

Jack is a 7 year old, male neutered, cat with a great demeanor looking for a new home. Jack was recently diagnosed with diabetes, and unfortunately his owner is simply unable to keep up with his medical needs. Jack needs insulin shots two times a day and will need weekly re-check appointments for the next few weeks until his diabetes is under control. The overall outlook on his life is great though! Many cats with diabetes are well managed for life, they just need a little extra love and attention and boy is this cat worth it! He is a lover and his personality is a 10/10. Please don’t let his medical needs stop you from adopting if you’re interested!

If you have any more specific questions regarding his adoption please contact Sherri at (785) 694-3974. If you have specific questions about cats and diabetes please call Swart Vet Hospital at (785) 460-1078.

Today is World Veterinary Day!! 🌎👩🏼‍⚕️⚕️

Veterinarians are essential health workers important for both human and animal health combined. Did you know veterinarians do so much more than just treat dogs and cats?

• Advising local, state and national health boards of disease of zoonotic transmission
• They work at the USDA and other organizations to perform food safety studies and inspections to ensure the overall safety of our food supply.
• They work at the CDC to study and trace diseases and assist in disease outbreaks and control
• They protect our boarders from diseases that have been eradicated in the United States from being imported back in
• They are trained foreign animal disease diagnosticians and epidemiologists
• They conduct important life changing biomedical research for the benefit of both humans and animals
• They maintain vaccination regimes to prevent human disease transmitted from animals
• Implementing parasite control regimes to protect human health
• Advising on risks of animal contact for immunocompromised individuals
• Facilitating the use of guide and service dogs for disabled individuals

Veterinarians competencies must be regarded as an essential and integral part of health at large. The application of veterinary science contributes not only to animal health and well-being but also to humans physical, mental and social well-being.

This dimension of the veterinarians’ work often remains invisible to the society but protecting and improving the health of people, their pets and their communities is an essential part of the vet profession!

Thank you to all the amazing veterinarians out there, but especially all the ones in the Northwest Kansas area!!

Happy Veterinary Receptionist Week to the two spunky ladies up front that make us look good and make the clinic “go round”!

Teresa and Violet, you both are SO MUCH more than receptionists!

• You are some of the best multi-taskers in the world!
• You are the welcoming face of the clinic and spoil our patients with love and treats upon arrival.
• You offer sympathy and talk many clients through the hard decision of euthanasia.
• You triage phone calls and emergencies.
• You help carry sick pets inside from the car.
• You are often the ones who pick up p**p and potty accidents that may happen in the lobby!
• You handle many phone calls and conversations that the doctors simply don’t want to do.
• You remember names and faces that the doctors may have a hard time remembering and need your help.
• You catch mistakes the doctors make on billing and/or discharge instructions every week! We are only human!
• You are often the first staff members that see our patients. You notice when a pet looks unstable in the lobby and needs seen immediately.
• You give clients assurance and guidance on treatment and scheduling.
• You often arrive to work earlier than the doctors and work overtime.
• You are technical analysts and help with IT issues.
• You are our pharmacists and fill medications daily.
• You are both quirky and fun and provide office morale!

Thank you for your invaluable work you do everyday! This week is all about you!
• We see you
• We value you
• We owe you!!!

Sincerely,
Your doctors at Swartz Vet Hospital 💗
