This is one of my favorite duos! Everyone loves a father & daughter lesson.

Emily has been taking lessons with us for a few years now and Richie recently started taking lessons himself the last few months.

Today with the 35mph winds, we did a group ground work lesson. I let Emily take the reins and teach dad how to pick feet and free lunge Patches.

Giving students the chance to teach what they learn is one of my favorite activities to do with them. They get to show off their skills and I always say “if you can’t teach it, you don’t know it”. Emily definitely knows it, they both did awesome today!

Did you know we offer ship-in lessons?

Joanne and her mare Sedona came for a trail ride for more off property exposure. They both did absolutely fantastic.

As always, our lesson horse Little provided support with his calm and nonchalant attitude.

A horse perceives your weight aids first-

They weren’t born with legs around their sides or hands attached to their mouth. They have to learn how to understand and respond to those. But they were born inherently tuned in to the sensory world. A rider’s weight is the first thing they feel, before the leg and the rein, and the first thing they adapt to.

As riders, we must take great care that the weight aid, intentional or not, is not countering the hand or leg. If we aren’t aware of our bodies, our hands and legs will be forever in opposition to our weight. A horse has to make sense of this confusing cacophony of signaling, and decide which to ignore. Ultimately, a hand or leg become stronger, and the horse is forced to ignore the seat. It’s then that riders begin describing a horse as dull, not forward, or disobedient- when they are obeying exactly what we told them- which was a load of nothing.

SWITCHBACKS SEPTEMBER!

One of my Top 10 most asked questions from students is “when can we do switchbacks again?”

Switchbacks are a wonderful way to work on balance, bending, and core strength for both horse and rider.

This exercise teaches students to create a bend with the correct leg position and can be done at all gates to help establish lead changes. Students learn to have a quiete seat and maintain rhythm in the process. Plus it’s fun!
