Did you know we offer ship-in lessons?

Joanne and her mare Sedona came for a trail ride for more off property exposure. They both did absolutely fantastic.

As always, our lesson horse Little provided support with his calm and nonchalant attitude.

A horse perceives your weight aids first-

They weren’t born with legs around their sides or hands attached to their mouth. They have to learn how to understand and respond to those. But they were born inherently tuned in to the sensory world. A rider’s weight is the first thing they feel, before the leg and the rein, and the first thing they adapt to.

As riders, we must take great care that the weight aid, intentional or not, is not countering the hand or leg. If we aren’t aware of our bodies, our hands and legs will be forever in opposition to our weight. A horse has to make sense of this confusing cacophony of signaling, and decide which to ignore. Ultimately, a hand or leg become stronger, and the horse is forced to ignore the seat. It’s then that riders begin describing a horse as dull, not forward, or disobedient- when they are obeying exactly what we told them- which was a load of nothing.

SWITCHBACKS SEPTEMBER!

One of my Top 10 most asked questions from students is “when can we do switchbacks again?”

Switchbacks are a wonderful way to work on balance, bending, and core strength for both horse and rider.

This exercise teaches students to create a bend with the correct leg position and can be done at all gates to help establish lead changes. Students learn to have a quiete seat and maintain rhythm in the process. Plus it’s fun!

Happy Labor Day!

Take a moment today to remember all the working animals who have helped throughout history. There are fewer working animals in the world than there once was, but they still play an important role in many people’s lives.

They assist people with disabilities, help with agricultural work, are used in law enforcement, and more! These animals are an essential part of communities and make the world a better place.

Also a big “happy day of labor” to all our people in the horse industry that laugh at the idea of taking today off. We love and appreciate you, as do the horse!

Free lunging is a great communication builder to be able to direct your horse at all gaits without any physical contact. You see how quiet and soft you can be with your aids as you direct them to change gaits and direction. Three horses at once makes for a challenging experience, especially with more than one person in the arena. It was a bit chaotic at first, but everyone got the hang of it quickly. Twix enjoyed himself so much he didn’t want to leave the arena 😅

Confidence building is SO important for equestrians. It’s also extremely important for all equestrians to spend time out of the saddle with horses to learn from the ground. Ground work isn’t something that all barns teach, but it should be.

A year ago you could find Emily shedding frustration tears almost weekly. In recent months she had her big “ah-ha” moment and she’s been progressing quickly and gaining more confidence.

Yesterday, her dad and I were putting back another horse and she yelled to me across the farm “Morgan, I’m going to free lunge him!”. You would not believe how shocked I was, I’m sure my face showed it as she had only done it once before with me 🤣

Laughing about the situation on our way over to the arena, I realized how confident she had become. She did get to free lunge Patches by herself (with supervision of course), and made a good call to lunge him. He was feeling good in the cooler weather and definitely needed to get his crazies out.

Reading horses isn’t an easy feat. I’m so proud of her for knowing by his attitude and body language, that he needed a lunge prior to riding. I’m beyond proud of not only the confident rider she’s become, but how much knowledge she’s acquired through her determination. Knowledge is the key to confidence 👏🏼

In honor of our first day under 70° this summer we’d like to take the time to thank our staff for all their continued hard work. We all look forward to summer days all winter long, but horse people know that summer brings along its own set of challenges.

This summer has been absolutely brutal with high humidity, frequent heatwaves, and constant pop up rain storms.

Thank you all for not only taking great care of the horses, but taking care of each other. We couldn’t do it without you!

We love that for us. Thanks, Luna 🤦🏼‍♀️
