Mitten State Sheep and Wool

Day 4-Pasture. Our sheep live on pasture all year round, with the occasional use of the barns as shelter during inclement weather. Sheep do an amazing job improving the land, by rotating paddocks, they keep the grass/weeds mowed down all while fertilizing the pastures, through the warmer months. During the winter months, they have access to free choice hay. “Sheep turn grass into wool 💚 What’s your superpower” 🤓

day 3- Flock. A group of sheep are called a flock. Our flock of sheep consist of dual purpose breeds. Here is a photo of our flock, from a winter in Michigan, staying warm with their winter coats 🩵

Day 2 “sheep” our adventure began with 4 Romney ewes. It was love at first sight, but as with any relationship it’s had its ups and downs. Raising sheep is not for the faint of heart. After raising them for over 27 years, I can’t imagine what life would be like, without sheep on the farm. Lambing season, shearing days, winter hay feeding has all become second nature. Each year it can bring new challenges, but being a shepherd has become a part of who I am.

“woolcome” to day one of . We love all things sheep & wool! 27 years ago, it started with four sheep and zero experience. We have learned a lot over the years and I am forever grateful for the farm, the sheep and the mill. 🩵 Looking forward to a month of WOOL!

Can I be excited about yarn? We had some white Romney wool that was on the coarser side and I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. I am so glad that I decided to do our first 3 ply bulky yarn with this fleece. I think all wool has a place…even the not so soft wool. This is a strong, durable yarn that will be perfect for needle punch, weaving, knit bags etc. The darker colors are not as coarse, but still perfect for those types of projects, and Romney overdyes beautifully “Trewely Romney”
