Meet Roscoe!

Roscoe is a 3 year-old Pitbull. Roscoe was found in a park as a very young puppy. A local rescue group took him in, got him vetted, and was even able to find him a home. However, he was returned to the rescue a few months ago due to no fault of his own. He has spent more time adopted and in a home, than in rescue. We're hoping to help keep that his story! He is such a sweet boy. He can be timid when you first meet him, but he's never met anyone he didn't love. He can be a ball of energy at times, but he also loves to snuggle up and receive love. He's done well with other dogs and children previously. The rescue isn't sure how he'll do with cats.

Meet Reba!

Reba is a Labrador Retriever mix who was born into a hoarding situation. She was surrendered into rescue and has been here ever since. After being taken into rescue, she tested positive for parvo, along with her littermates. She has recovered but hasn't found a home yet. She is now a 2-year-old. She takes some time to warm up to people, but will love you forever once she's familiar with you. We do know Reba has previously gotten along with other dogs she's been introduced with, but she has yet to meet a cat, so we're not sure how she'll do.

Though she had a rough start to her life, we're not giving up on her and know we can help find her a good life! If you'd like to meet Reba to see if it's a good fit, please contact us! As always, we want nothing but the best for her!

Meet Snitch!

Snitch is an almost 3 year old Labrador retriever mix dog. He is so sweet and affectionate. He is athletic, smart, loyal, independent, and food motivated.

He is house broken and crate trained. He was previously in a home with young kids. As it turned out, Snitch doesn't like young kids very well. He will need to go in a home with either no kids or a home with older kids who understand boundaries, space, and patience. Snitch does have a basic training skillset! It will be a great basis for any new family to be able to build upon. For example, he is leash trained, but will need a little more strict, repetitive work to hone in on those skills. So far, he has picked up new commands easily. We do know Snitch has previously gotten along with other dogs he's been introduced with, but he has yet to meet a cat, so we're not sure how he'll do.

He was dumped as a puppy and has had a lot of trials in his almost 3 years of life, but we're not giving up on him and know we can help find him a good life!

Meet River!

River is a 4 year old mixed breed dog. He is so sweet and affectionate. He loves to run around and play! He's very curious, smart, and food motivated.

He was found in 2022 in East Brazos County. After being found with no collar or tags, he was scanned for a microchip. Unfortunately, he didn't have one. His previous owner was attempted to be found for a really long time, but the rescue believes he was dumped.

He is house broken and crate trained. He was previously fostered with another dog and they got along great. There was a cat in the home with him, that he loved to sniff, but they never officially spent any time together as the cat was very shy and liked to hide. From what the rescue has seen so far, it appears that River would do well in a home with kids or other pets.

Meet Laverne!

Laverne is a 2.5 year old Shepherd mix. She is so sweet and affectionate, but does take some time to warm up to you. She loves to curl up and cuddle once she feels safe. We're hoping to help find the perfect safe space for her!

Her shy reserved side doesn't come without its reasons. She was dumped as a puppy on a county road with all of her littermates and her sister/best friend Shirley, who is also still waiting on her forever home. It took a couple of weeks to catch her, but it was so worth it to know she wasn't left to fend for herself. The best reward would be for her to end up in a loving home. She is not only friendly with people, but also other dogs. She hasn't been around any cats previously. Once she's warmed up, she'll choose you for life. She is so much cuter than her pictures show and we love her dearly, but we can't wait for her to have a forever!

Meet Shirley!

Shirley is a 2.5 year old Hound mix. She is so sweet and affectionate, but does take some time to warm up to you. She just wants to be a couch potato with someone who will show her nothing but love.

While Shirley may have a shy side, it doesn't come without its reasons. She was dumped as a puppy on a county road with all of her littermates and her sister/best friend Laverne, who is also still waiting on her forever home. It took 6 weeks to catch her, but it was so worth it to know she wasn't left to fend for herself. The best reward would be for her to end up in a loving home. Meet Echo!

Echo is a 6 year old Terrier/Lab mix. She is so very friendly and affectionate. She loves to run around the yard and play, but she really loves to curl up and cuddle at the end of the day.

Echo is such a happy girl who is so thankful to have been pulled from a high-kill animal shelter. She was scheduled to be euthanized due to limited space, but the rescue couldn't allow that to happen! She is not only friendly with people, but also other dogs. She loves people of all ages and is such a smart girl. She knows a few basic commands and is house trained!

Have you gotten a chance to meet Dr. Richards?

Dr. Richards is the owner of Summit Veterinary Hospital. She is who sees each and every one of our patients!

She is a Texas native who was born and raised in Dallas. She grew up with parents who had an outpouring of love for animals, which kickstarted her desire to become a veterinarian. Her favorite animals are elephants. She's had the opportunity to work with a herd of African Elephants in South Africa and loved every moment of it!

She graduated from Texas A&M University in 2003 with a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Development. She later went on to complete a second Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science, a Master's degree in Toxicology, and then her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Colorado State University. She has experience in general practice in both small and large animal medicine, emergency medicine, and academia.

She is married to her best friend, Robert, and together they have 3 beautiful children. Dr. Richards started planning to open her own veterinary hospital several years ago. That dream came true in 2022 when the doors to Summit opened.

The staff at Summit Veterinary Hospital is so thankful to have Dr. Richards as our fearless leader, even though she constantly keeps us on our toes!

Remember the litter of puppies we posted about a couple of weeks ago?

Well, they are now 4.5 weeks old and ADORABLE!! They will be ready to go to their new homes in a few more weeks, but most of them don't have homes currently. We're trying to help find homes and we're hoping you can help, too!

Here's what we know: They're a lab mix, but look like they may have some German Shorthair Pointer in them as well. They're all VERY sweet and have been handled since they've been born. When they go to their new house, they will have already started their puppy vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and flea prevention. They have already been dewormed once, but will be dewormed again once they're able to start their vaccinations.

There are 6 girls and 3 boys. If you are interested in adopting a puppy, please contact us so we can point you in the right direction! We're hoping we can help find all 9 puppies a forever home soon!

Meet Floki!

Floki is one of the best boys! He is so very sweet, playful, and such a smart boy! He is looking for his perfect forever home.

He is a German Shepherd mix who is almost 3 years old now. Floki was born into rescue and unfortunately, hasn't found anyone to give him a home yet. His littermates have all been adopted. He is such a fast learner, LOVES affection, and wants to play with adults or kids. He has been introduced to other dogs and has done well. He hasn't been introduced to any cats, so we're not sure how he'll do. He doesn't know any tricks other than how to be a playful and affectionate boy, but we're sure he'd LOVE to learn all sorts of tricks, as he is food motivated.

Floki is already neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and dewormed. He is heartworm negative and is currently on heartworm prevention!

We know the New Year starts with a bang each year. We also know that many of our furry family members don't appreciate the loud noises. If you have a pet who gets very stressed or scared with all the celebration, be sure to give us a call! If your pet needs a medication refilled to help with their anxiety or stress, be sure to let us know ahead of time! This will ensure enough time to get the prescription. If your pet isn't currently on any medication, but they stress easily, we can get them in to see Dr. Richards and talk about available options for the upcoming celebrations.

Meet Rexford!

Rexford is a very sweet, playful, smart boy! He is looking for his perfect forever home.

He is a Staffordshire Terrier mix who is about 6 years old. Rexford does have some dog friends that he has made, but he is picky. Therefore, he would prefer to be an only pet, as he doesn't get along with cats. He is such a fast learner, LOVES affection, and wants to play with adults or kids. He has a few tricks up his sleeve (sit, shake, and lie down), but would love to have someone spend the time to teach him more!

Rexford is already neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and dewormed. He is heartworm negative and is currently on heartworm prevention!

It’s our first official ‘Furry Friends Friday’!

We had a surprise this morning, so we figured we’d share it today! One of the rescue dogs had her puppies this morning. Here’s what we know:

•Mom is a medium sized lab mix, we’re unsure who dad is

•There were 9 puppies born this morning

•There are 6 girls and 3 boys

•They’re ADORABLE!!

•All 9 puppies and momma dog will be looking for their forever homes before we know it

The puppies won’t be available until after they’re weaned and started on their vaccines, dewormer, and heartworm, flea, and tick prevention. Their momma will be ready to be adopted out once she no longer has babies depending on her, she’s spayed, and she’s up-to-date on her vaccines, dewormer, and prevention!

Do you know?

Do you know what is one of the most common illnesses diagnosed around Thanksgiving by veterinarians?

P A N C R E A T I T I S

Veterinarians often diagnose pancreatitis in patients around Thanksgiving. Inflammation in the pancreas can often times be triggered by fatty or greasy foods. Our companion animals gastrointestinal (GI) tract are much more sensitive than ours! This means even the smallest amount of our yummy Thanksgiving feast can quickly cause pain and illness in our furry family members.

A few signs of pancreatitis are:
- nausea/vomiting
- fever
- lethargy
- abdominal pain
- diarrhea
- decreased appetite

While the safest option is to only feed your pet their regular food and treats, here's a small list of items to make sure NOT to feed your pet:

- bones
- turkey skin and gravy
- stuffing
- casseroles
- potatoes
- chocolate
- raisins and grapes
- onions
- garlic
- ham

If your pet is experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, or aren't feeling like their normal self, be sure to call your veterinary clinic and get your pet examined!
