Summer is in full swing, and many of us will be out walking our dogs, playing fetch, or even taking a dip in the pool! Depending on the age and size of their pet, their exercise needs may differ. Our friends at PetMD have a great resource for dog owners on how to exercise with their furry friends and what to expect depending on their size.

Though it may seem like your four-legged friend loves nothing more than to nap on the couch, dogs need regular exercise too.

As we embrace the warmer weather and outdoor activities, it is important to remember our pets during snake season. Here are a few tips to keep them safe and sound:

Stay Vigilant on Walks: When walking in areas known for snakes, keep your pets on a leash and stick to clear paths. Avoid tall grass and rocky crevices.

Backyard Safety: Keep your backyard clean and tidy to reduce potential hiding spots for snakes. Ensure your fence is secure and check for holes.

Know the Signs: If you hear a spot a snake, move away with your pet calmly. Snakes tend to warn before striking, so listen for the distinctive sound.

Vaccinations: If your pet happens to get bitten by a snake, a snake vaccine can lessen the severity of the bite. We recommend the Crotalus snake vaccine which is offered at South 40.

Identification: When pets are scared by fireworks or loud noises, they can jump fences or dig their way out, causing them to get lost. In case they become scared and escape, a collar with ID tags or a microchip greatly increases the chances of a safe return home.

Medication: Anti-anxiety medicine can be important for pets during the Fourth of July because fireworks displays can cause extreme stress and fear. These medications can help calm pets and alleviate their anxiety, making the holiday safer and more comfortable for them.

Food: It's important to keep party food out of pets' reach during the Fourth of July because many common human foods, such as those at cookouts and picnics, can be harmful or toxic to pets. Items like chocolate, onions, grapes, and alcohol can cause serious health issues for animals if ingested. Additionally, high-fat foods or those with bones can lead to digestive problems or choking hazards. Keeping these foods out of reach helps prevent accidental ingestion and keeps pets safe.

Security: Securing and locking all doors and gates during the Fourth of July is important for pets to prevent them from escaping due to fear or anxiety caused by fireworks. Loud noises from fireworks displays can startle pets, causing them to panic and attempt to flee. By securing doors and gates, pet owners can help ensure their animals remain safely confined within the home or yard, reducing the risk of them getting lost or injured.
