FEROCIOUS FIREWORKS
I’ll be spending New Years Eve at home, in my pajamas, cuddled up with my dogs, as I always do.

Fireworks are something I dislike intensely. They are not only terrifying for so many different animals but are also dreaded by caring people, who have to watch, often helplessly as their dog suffers through the deafening bangs.

Shelters become overrun with lost dogs, dogs are knocked over by cars or go missing in their attempt to escape, they jump through glass windows, over high walls, have heart attacks, seizures or worse.

As there’s very little we can do to prevent other people from doing what they do, the best solution is to do all we can to minimize the impact this has on our dogs.

All dogs are different and there’s never a guarantee that these methods will work. Some dogs are just the way they are because of genetics, their experiences, learning history, health conditions, age etc.

Here are some helpful links if you’d like more information on some ideas that may help –

Mystery Canine Respiratory Illness?

Many of you may have seen online posts reporting a new and unknown type of contagious respiratory illness spreading amongst dogs in the US. While some of these articles are sensationalized and contain misinformation that can cause undue fear and panic, some of the information is accurate.

The first thing you need to understand is that this illness is not truly new, it has been seen for nearly two years in small outbreaks in various states, mainly to the north. Numerous tests have been run at veterinary diagnostic laboratories but so far a cause has not been identified. What we do know if that it is highly contagious (from dog to dog like a typical respiratory disease like canine influenza) and can rapidly progress to a pneumonia serious enough to require hospitalization. There have been a few deaths associated with this illness however those numbers (while devastating for those dogs and families) are much smaller than the social media articles are portraying.

Symptoms can vary but can include coughing, sneezing, ocular and/or nasal discharge and lethargy. If you note symptoms in your pet, contact your veterinarian and keep them isolated from other dogs to the best of your ability.

Despite what some articles claim we are not seeing this illness spread rapidly nor has it been found in every state. It is more common in certain areas at the moment. With the upcoming holiday season travel however, it is possible we could see an increase in cases.

While we have not been made aware of any current outbreaks in our area, there were several cases seen at the Texas A&M Small Animal Hospital earlier this year.

So what can you do to protect your dog? Contact your veterinarian to see if cases have been noted in your area. If you do have active cases in the area, do your best to avoid dog parks, play groups and boarding kennels and limit contact with other dogs. The current recommendation by veterinary professionals is to ensure that at-risk dogs (those that board or are frequently exposed to other dogs) are current on their bordetella, parainfluenza and canine influenza vacccines as these may have some cross-protective effects.

We will be sure to update when and if more information is available! Please feel free to contact our clinic if you have any questions!

It’s been said once or maybe thousand times, leave your cat carrier out 24/7/365 so it is safe and as benign as any other piece of furniture.

Place soft bedding inside, treats and scent enrichment to encourage use and exploration.

I use the carrier as part of our clicker training props so it is seen as “fun” and something they want and choose to engage with. I don’t even need to leave mine out due to this, they are anxious to get in once the see them.

Søren has a preventative care visit to the internist today. Can you believe he is TEN years old?!?! Got the carrier out this am, like a magnet, he entered it instantly! When it was time to leave, he was sound asleep inside, closed the door and we’re off!

These recommendations really work! Embrace them, implement them, make your life and theirs easier!

Some great ideas for our feline friends! 🐱

I'm super excited to share this post! I have been working on this for a long time. I wanted to first give a shout out to my inspirations if I may. I was inspired to create this after seeing the awesome Play Infographic work of Doggie Drawings by Lili Chin and Dr. Mikel Delgado of What Your Cat Wants, but that inspiration combined with getting to know .png’s art really brought it together. This is the same artist who has created images for my Fundamentally Feline t-shirts and other swag items. She is so talented! My hope is to bring you an entire series of these on a variety of topics (in all of my spare time!)

Please share far and wide. If you are a vet clinic, shelter or rescue group and you would like to have a poster for your space, please visit my printful shop to purchase a full sized poster (12x18). Here is that link https://www.fundamentallyfeline.com/products/foraging-101-infographic/

What’s more fun than a box of kittens?? Not much! 😻

These sweet babies are just about a month old and were found by some very kind people after being abandoned near a dumpster.

Other than needing some extra groceries these little ones are in decent health and have bright futures ahead of them in loving homes! ❤️

Looking to take some pictures in the bluebonnets of your pup? It’s a lovely spring tradition but a few precautions should be taken!

Stay away from the sides of busy roads and highways, it would be a very dangerous place for your pet to get loose! Some good local public places are: Millican Reserve, the George Bush Presidential Library and the TAMU Gardens.

Also keep an eye out for snakes 🐍, fire ants and bees hidden in the tall grass and flowers!

A great tip: bring some of your dog’s favorite treats to get that perfect picture of them looking right at the camera! 📸

Enjoy the beauty of our wildflowers and email us some of your favorite pictures, we’d love to post them! 🐶❤️

Senior home hack: lights! 🐶💡

As our pets age their vision can become impaired especially in low-light conditions. A great way to help them navigate is to use these inexpensive motion-sensor lights!

Placing them near food/water bowls, stairs, ramps and even doorways can help alleviate anxiety, prevent accidents and allow them to more easily access their food and water!

These lights are available on Amazon.com in a multi-pack and are battery operated.
