Bottle-fed Dexter bull calf
The evening bottle to supplement his surrogate nursing cow’s supply. #bottlefed #smallfarm #homestead
We almost lost a newborn calf.
Monday morning Benjamin noticed a cow we were watching for signs of labor had dropped her calf during the night. She was a true specimen of an Irish Dexter cow and this little bull calf is a beauty like his mom! But as much as the calf tried to nurse he would barely spend time on any one treat before moving to the next and after trying all four he would give up and cry, cry, cry. It was pitiful! So I loaded her into the chute and checked her teats, there was zero milk coming out…NONE! He was hungry and it was critical to get colostrum in his belly in the first 24 hours because their system can’t absorb the special colostrum nutrients after 24 hours. I was off to tractor supply for powdered colostrum and although he fought it hard he eventually learned to appreciate our feeding him by bottle. He has warmed to us and is now even letting Bethany lead him around the yard. Could this be any more precious?!
Unfortunately, because his mom has a history of post-partem complications she will have a date with the butcher. I don’t want to butcher such a fine specimen of a mother cow but I can’t have defective udders being passed on genetically to another animal. So it is with sadness I will introduce her to the butcher. It’s an unfortunate reality and just one of many hard decisions farmers have to make sometimes.
I am however thankful Benjamin observed the new calf and we could save him before it was too late.

Irish Dexter Cattle are my favorite
Gentle disposition, smaller size, exceptional beef, creamy milk, and a broad palate for assorted grasses and woody growth make them the ideal homestead cow.
It’s calving season at Maranatha Farms!
They may be cute and fluffy right now, but in just a few weeks, these will turn into plump chickens ready for your dinner table.

But can your turkey play soccer? With a personality more like a pet cat, Forrest the turkey thinks he’s a part of the family. I’m not sure SOCCER is quite what he has in his mind though.

This kid…won’t be a kid much longer. Carrying the load (and a new calf) for me while I’m away during the day.
Headed to work and this is what I find. Birds, birds, birds!!! 🦃🦆🐓🪿🦚
Big surprise from Benjamin and the cows this morning
I was rushed to get out to work, but knew that the cows needed to be moved and discovered Benjamin was two steps ahead of me.
