This patient was one of our first dental cleanings of National Pet Dental Month. He presented with severe periodontal disease which was causing him significant pain and discomfort. After his cleaning, we were able to see the full extent of his gum recession and had to extract several teeth.

His family reported back to us that he is feeling better and eating more now that his mouth is no longer causing him any discomfort!

For National Pet Dental Health Month we are offering a $50 discount on dental cleanings through the end of February.

Not sure if your pet needs a dental cleaning? Call or text us to schedule a complimentary dental exam at 901-861-BARK (2275) 🐾

✨ Employee Spotlight ✨

Dr. Camp, a New Orleans native, is our newest veterinarian and has been with us for almost 3 years. She loves working in veterinary medicine because every day is different and she loves getting to know so many families and caring for their furry family members. Of course, she is a dog person (specifically goldens and cavaliers), but she also loves dolphins! We bet you didn't know she was a marine mammal trainer in Key West before she decided to go to vet school! When she isn't caring for her precious patients, Dr. Camp enjoys running, swimming, and spending time with her husband, three very active boys, and pets.

This precious Pomeranian came to us for a second opinion on some nasal problems she was having. Upon further inspection of her little nose, Dr. Kelsey saw something that didn't look quite right. He was able to gently remove a long blade of grass that had been stuck in her nose for weeks!

We are proud to announce that Kelsey Canine is now the ONLY Trupanion Certified Hospital in the Memphis area!

What does this mean?

It means that our veterinary practice has gone through a process to become familiar with and effectively utilize the Trupanion pet insurance platform, allowing us to seamlessly submit claims directly to Trupanion and provide a smooth experience for clients with Trupanion pet insurance policies. This signifies our commitment to working efficiently with Trupanion clients and their insurance plans.

What is bloat in dogs?

Bloat, also known as gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) complex, is a medical (and sometimes surgical) emergency. Bloat is a serious condition in which a dog's stomach fills with gas, food, or liquid and the abdomen becomes painfully dilated. This stage is called “simple bloat." The rapidly expanding pressure of the bloat may lead to volvulus, in which the distended stomach twists or flips over on itself, blocking the entrance and exit to the stomach. The rotated stomach obstructs blood flow, causing organ and tissue damage with potential for the spleen, stomach or diaphragm to rupture, leading to life-threatening shock.

If your dog is displaying signs of bloat/GDV, they need to see a veterinarian immediatley.

Symptoms of bloat in dogs may include:

- Unproductive vomiting (dry heaving)
- Abdominal pain or distension, belly may feel hard
- Restlessness, pacing, stretching, an inability to get comfortable
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Anxiously looking back at or chewing at their belly
- Racing heartbeat
- Collapse

What causes bloat in dogs?

- Ingesting large amounts of food or water too quickly
- Exercising immediately after eating
- Eating from an elevated food bowl
- Eating dog food with fat or oil listed in the first four ingredients

Dogs with a family history of bloat, are deep-chested, over 99lbs, or in their senior years have a higher chance of bloating.

If you suspect your dog is suffering from bloat, DO NOT WAIT to see if it gets better on its own. Call your veterinarian immediately!

Our Story

The Kelsey Canine Medical Center opened its doors on May 14, 2007, as the fulfillment of the dream of owner Dr. Carr Kelsey to establish a veterinary practice dedicated solely to dogs. After practicing veterinary medicine in Collierville for more than eight years, Dr. Kelsey decided to turn his focus to providing the best possible medical care for man’s best friend, and Kelsey Canine has been “Where Dogs Rule” ever since! We are one of only a few canine-exclusive practices in the country, and the only one locally. We pride ourselves on enhancing the lives of canines, so they may enrich the lives of those who love them.
