"Loping small circles is the most important exercise I do with my horses, because if I can put a strong turn on a horse, I can take one who is not necessarily the fastest horse and make it competitive." - Joy Wargo

8 tips to keeping your foal healthy

1️⃣ Foals should attempt to stand within 30 minutes after birth and begin to nurse within 2 hours after birth.

2️⃣ Colostrum (the first portion of milk) needs to be ingested as soon as possible after birth. Good quality colostrum is an important factor in the foal having adequate passive transfer of immunity. Within the first 8-12 hours is recommended or it is unlikely that adequate intestinal absorption will occur.

3️⃣ We recommend checking the IgG levels when the foal is 12-24 hours old and perform a CBC. Also running a plasma transfusion will help the foal get off to a great start.

4️⃣ The umbilical cord should be dipped in a dilute 1:4 chlorhexidine solution to help prevent infection.

5️⃣ The first foal f***s is called meconium and should be passed within 12 hours after birth. The consistency may be pasty or little f***l balls and can be dark brown in color.

6️⃣ Foals on average nurse 30 times per day and gain 2-3% of their body weight daily.

7️⃣ The foal should be active and able to keep up with the mare 24-48 hours after birth without struggling to breath.

8️⃣ Foals may begin life with weak legs and be down in their pasterns. If they don’t begin to correct on their own after a couple of days additional medical attention will be needed to assist in correction of the issue.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call or text the office (940-230-6611) and we will do our best to get your foal off to a great start.

🐴 Mare Monday 🐴

Foaling season is upon us. Here are 8 tips to help you feel prepared and ready.

1️⃣ A minimum of 14x14 size stall is recommended. It should be sanitized and straw bedding is less likely to stick to the mare and foal like wood shavings do.
2️⃣ Signs that the mare is prepping for labor include, β€œwaxing” of the udder, relaxation of the pelvic ligaments, restlessness, sweating, and raising of her tail.
3️⃣ Commercial test strips are avable that will detect a sudden increase in calcium that will indicate imminent foaling.
4️⃣ Labor occurs in 3 stages-
β–ͺ️Mare will position the foal with the initial uterine contractions, that can last 1-2 hours.
β–ͺ️Water breaks and strong uterine contractions begin. This stage should only last 20-40 minutes.
β–ͺ️After she has the foal the placenta needs to be passed within 3 hours. It needs to be checked to make sure none was retained.
5️⃣ If the mare retains her placenta for longer than 3 hours a vet needs to be contacted immediately. Mares can become toxic and get laminitis, which will require hospital care.
6️⃣ Check the mares udder for good milk production.
7️⃣ Very soon after birth the mare should start interacting with her foal by nickering and can become very protective of her foal.
8️⃣ Continue to monitor the mare for signs for infection, increased temperature, lethargic, not wanting to eat, and foul smelling vaginal discharge.

If you ever have any questions or concerns please reach out 940-230-6611. We wish everyone a quick and non eventful foaling season.

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe but it should never be ignored, as many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic, so management practices can play a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can help you maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

As always, remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed and other health conditions, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to address any concerns specific to your situation!
