Starting puppies early is important for developing confidence in grooming and handling. This little guy was so brave and gave kisses during his session at only 13weeks of age. Perfect time to introduce him to a small amount of stress/stimulation and allow him to have a very positive experience.

Nail care is an essential part of pet health care. Particularly in the colder winter months when pets aren’t out wearing down their nails on walks or playing outside, it is important to maintain nail health more often. Excess nail growth can place pressure on your pets joints and ligaments creating pain and potential structure issues such as splayed feet, injured tendons and arthritis particularly in elderly pets. Keeping your pets nail bed healthy will also help prevent the risk of infections, germs, fungus and bacteria growth. Your pets nails should be maintained every 3-4 weeks dependent on activity level.

We are aware of the canine respiratory virus spreading throughout Colorado as well as a growing number of states.

Several local veterinarians and emergency clinics have begun to receive pets affected by the virus. We are currently continuing our sanitation/dinisfecting procedures as required by our PACFA regulations. We are keeping informed of any new procedures that might provide additional protection.

Our facility has had no known exposure and we hope to keep it that way so we ask that if your pet shows any signs of illness to please cancel your appointment and contact your veterinarian. Typical symptoms are cough, sneezing, unusual backward type sneeze/cough, sometimes nasal discharge, eye discharge, foamy mouth, not eating, vomiting, lethargy and fever. We are constantly monitoring everyone for possible symptoms and ask that you pick your pets up as soon as possible upon completion. We are keeping kennels further separated unless they are within the same family and as usual no direct contact is being allowed with others.

If your pet has recently been boarded, spent time in daycare, played at nearby dog parks please contact us prior to arrival.

Without enough information on this virus, boosting your pets immune system is highly recommended. You can contact your veterinarian for recommendations on probiotics, vitamins, diet etc. I recommended wiping off your pets feet after walks since they are prone to licking their paws and do not allow them to lick or eat anything off grounds while you have them out. Keeping your pets and our pets at home safe is our goal.

Originally from Kansas City, Melissa began her grooming career almost 30 years ago while working as a veterinary technician. Along with grooming, Melissa’s passion for animals drew her in different directions. While she working as a vet tech, Melissa and her husband Dave began assisting local breed rescues, shutting down puppy mills and rehabilitating abused or neglected pets for permanent placement in appropriate homes. This work brought to the forefront their gift for handling and teaching animals. Melissa and Dave began apprenticing under a wonderful professional and through that mentor, had the opportunity to work with numerous professional canine and human stars and trainers. They worked with a variety of animals (dogs, cats, lions, tigers, bears) on commercial sets, video productions and photographic print work for Hallmark cards and calendars.

They trained dogs to perform hundreds of behaviors for motion picture roles, live plays, (Scruffy the little rescue dog earned the title of Best Debuting Actor over human stars!). They have performed dog bite prevention demonstrations as well as trick performances for schools, utilities and events. Dave and Melissa owned and operated a boarding, training and grooming facility. They have competed and participated with their personal dogs in trick, Frisbee, agility, obedience, schuthund and conformation. Dave was a law enforcement officer/canine handler for many years and trained dogs for law enforcement and executive protection. He also enjoys working with and training horses and is hoping to compete in Mounted shooting soon. Over the years Melissa managed to fine tune her scissor skills, keeping up with breed styles and changes along the way. They moved to Colorado in 2006 and have continued their professional grooming career in the Briargate area since their arrival. In 2012 Melissa became the owner of Best Friends Pet Salon in Colorado Springs.
