Folks ask sometimes what the beeswax we sell is used for. Besides a great lip and hand balm ingredient, one pretty unique use is for bead work!

The thread used for beading can fray, especially when weaving through beads multiple times. A layer of beeswax can help protect the thread.

This is what we call a "deep" frame, bulging with honey!
The deep frames are for the bees, we never harvest any of their honey. Every hive needs 10 of these frames, about 100 pounds of honey, for winter.

Asher from Ahavah Farm is the youngest journeyman blacksmith in the country! But today we got him out of his workshop and taught him how to install bees in a top bar hive. Bees and Sundry will eventually have 4 or 5 different hive types in the apiary so that folks can learn about all the different types available. Top bar hives are great for those with lowered mobility or who cannot lift the heavy langstroth style hives.

Busy day today getting hive boxes ready for the ladies coming later this month. You don't want to paint the insides of hives, or edges where the bees will be landing, but the outsides do need protection from the elements. We are using up remnants of paint cans from other projects: reduce, reuse, recycle! Check out our upcoming events for our first hands on classes: Installing New Packages and then the follow-up, Your First Inspection. If you are a new beekeeper, these classes are perfect to get some hands-on experience for your first year keeping.

It's fall and the ladies are slowing down. There's still a lot of coming and going, but NOTHING like the busy busy entrances during summer. Hive reducers are already in but they're loose right now - once it's regularly freezing at night and cold during they day, they'll be snug in the entrances to keep out as much cold as possible while still allowing bees to come out on warm days.
