Dogs are amazing companions, bringing joy and love into our lives. However, it’s important to remember that they come with their own set of natural behaviors. Barking, chewing, digging, and even jumping are all typical dog behaviors. It’s our responsibility as pet owners to teach them what is and isn’t appropriate.
Natural Dog Behaviors:
- Barking: Dogs bark to communicate, whether it's to alert you of something unusual or to express excitement.
- Chewing: Chewing helps puppies with teething and older dogs with dental health.
- Digging: Many dogs dig instinctively, whether to create a cool spot to lie down or to bury toys.
- Jumping: Dogs often jump to greet people or show enthusiasm.
Teaching Appropriate Behaviors:
- Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog with treats, praise, or play when they exhibit good behavior. This encourages them to repeat it.
- Redirection: If your dog is chewing on furniture, redirect them to a suitable chew toy and reward them when they engage with appropriate chew toys. Consistency is key!
- Training: Teach cues like “sit,” “stay,” “down,” and “leave it” to help provide mental stimulation for your dog which will help prevent unwanted behaviors.
- Consistent Boundaries: Set and enforce clear boundaries. If you don’t want your dog jumping on people then make sure everyone is aware they need to turn and walk away everytime your dog jumps.
- Provide Outlets for Natural Behaviors: Give your dog appropriate ways to express their natural behaviors, like designated digging areas or chew toys.
Remember, training takes time and patience. Dogs aren’t born knowing our rules—they rely on us to guide them. Understanding their natural behaviors helps us approach training with empathy and effectiveness.
By teaching your dog what is and isn't appropriate, you not only foster a well-behaved pet but also strengthen the bond you share. Together, you and your dog can enjoy a harmonious and happy life.
Happy training! 🐾
Heading to Territory Days? I am slinging lemonade and shaved ice to support rescue dogs from All Breed Rescue and Training. Stop by Jerry's Lemonade and Shaved Ice in front of Jake Snd Telly's.
Welcoming a new puppy into your home is an exciting adventure! To ensure your furry friend grows into a well-behaved and happy dog, focus on teaching these essential behaviors:
- House Training: Start with potty training to establish good bathroom habits.
- Basic Cues: Teach sit, down, and come for better control and safety.
- Crate Training: Helps with housebreaking and provides a safe space for your puppy.
- Leash Mannors: Train your pup to walk on a leash without pulling, making walks enjoyable.
- Socialization: Introduce your puppy to different people, places, and other animals to build confidence and reduce fear.
- Bite Inhibition: Teach your puppy to be gentle with their mouth to prevent nipping and biting.
Consistent training, patience, and positive reinforcement are key. But training a new puppy can be a stressful and scary task. That's where we can help! ABRT offers Puppy Raising 101 classes for any puppy under 16 weeks. Each week will feature a new theme, certified trainers will help walk you through every step with your new pup, and your puppy will get lots of socialization opportunities in a safe and controlled environment.
Our next class starts Wednesday, June 5th at 6pm. Email [email protected] to get signed up!

Although these two words arre often used interchangeably they do have different meanings. A cue is typically used in positive reinforcement training, A cue is an opportunity for your dog to do what you ASK and get rewarded for it (similar to you getting a paycheck for doing work). A command is an order that your dog must obey or they will get scolded or punished.
Our relationship with our dog matters. By using the cue instead of the command you can strengthen your relationship with your dog which will in turn lead to trust and loyalty from your dog.
Dogs are also very smart animals. They, like most animals, are very good at learning what works for them and what doesn’t and will repeat behaviors that prove to be rewarding for them. If your dog learns they may get something good for completing a behavior, they are morre likely to repeat that behavior
For some more info on the difference between cue and command, check out this article https://www.vsdogtrainingacademy.com/blog-posts/cue-or-command-why-does-dog-training-terminology-matter/

Happy Canine Fitness Month, everyone! It's the perfect time to celebrate our furry friends and their health and wellness. Just like humans, dogs need regular exercise to maintain good physical and mental health. This month, let's make a commitment to focus on our dogs' fitness and incorporate activities that will help them stay healthy and happy. Whether it's going for daily walks, playing fetch in the park, or trying out a new activity like swimming or agility, there are many ways to keep our pups active and engaged. But fitness isn't just about physical activity. It's also about nutrition and overall well-being. This month, let's pay attention to our dogs' diets and make sure they're getting the nutrients they need to thrive. And let's also take time to check in on their mental health, providing them with plenty of opportunities for socialization, mental stimulation, and relaxation. A great way to get your pup the mental and/or physical exercise they need is to take them to some fun training classes at aBRT! We have all sorts of different classes and we want to help you find the perfect class for you and your pup! Check out all the classes we offer, such as Agility, Nosework, Walk With Me, at haveanicedog.org/train or contact the front office to learn more and get sifgned up! Let's make this Canine Fitness Month the best one yet! Let's get out there with our dogs and have some fun while we work on keeping them healthy and happy for years to come. Here's to our furry friends and their well-being!

As a dog owner, one of the most important cues you can teach your pup is the recall, or "come when called." This cue can be a lifesaver in many situations and can help keep your dog safe and under control. For example, if your dog were to slip out of their collar or get loose, a strong recall cue could bring them back to safety. Additionally, if your dog were to approach a potentially dangerous situation or become overly excited, a reliable recall could prevent them from getting hurt or causing harm. Training your dog a recall also strengthens the bond between you and your furry friend. It demonstrates trust and respect, as well as provides an opportunity for positive reinforcement and rewards. But teaching a reliable recall takes time and patience. Consistent training and positive reinforcement are key. It's important to start training your dog when they're young and to practice in various environments and with increasing distractions. Remember, a recall cue should never be used as a punishment or a way to scold your dog. It should always be associated with positive reinforcement and praise. Because a reliable recall is so important, we include it in the curriculum of many of our classes! Check out our website to see what classes we offer and get in touch with our front desk to get your pup signed up today!
