With us in the midst of summer, we want to make sure your pets are safe! Some things to remember are:

โ˜‘๏ธ Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, seizures, bloody stool, and vomiting, to name a few

โ˜‘๏ธ NEVER leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle (Even with the window cracked! Studies have found that cracking the window has very little effect on the temp inside the car.)

โ˜‘๏ธ Educate your family and friends about the risks of leaving their pets in the car so they can keep their animals safe as well!
To read more on hot weather safety tips, check out this article from the ASPCA and share with your fellow animal lovers: https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/general-pet-care/hot-weather-safety-tips

While you're having fun with family and friends this Memorial Day Weekend, remember the following tips to help keep your pets safe this holiday:

โญ Cookouts are popular this holiday weekend, but the food and drink you serve your guests may be dangerous for pets. A few especially toxic examples include alcohol, raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, and avocado.

โญ Never leave your pets unsupervised around a pool, lake, or ocean. If you take your dog on a boat, we highly recommend having them wear a floatation device and keep them from drinking salt water. Also, try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains potentially dangerous chemicals.

โญ Be sure that your pet has appropriate ID tags and up-to-date microchip information. People leaving doors open and loud noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms can all increase your petsโ€™ chances of escaping.

โญ Be sure your pet has easy access to plenty of water so they don't get dehydrated - preferably in a shady spot, especially if they are spending a lot of time outside.

As a reminder, our hospital will be open for the holiday, with our usual business hours 2pm - 10pm.

Itโ€™s National Pet First Aid Awareness Month ๐Ÿฉน With the warmer weather approaching, everyone is more likely to be out with their pets at parks, on vacations, and in new areas. Being prepared is important for your petโ€™s safety.

We recommend always carrying a pet first aid kit stocked with items that are unexpired and that you know how to use. For example, your kit could include items such as nonstick bandages, adhesive bandage tape, towels, and absorbent gauze pads to control bleeding.

Check out this resource from the ASPCA to learn how to make your own pet first aid kit at home: https://www.aspcapro.org/resource/how-make-pet-first-aid-kit

With all the fun colors, furry ears, and sweet treats around, Easter can be full of unexpected pet hazards. ๐Ÿฐ As a reminder, here are a few items to keep away from pets this year:

๐Ÿซ Chocolate and candy as they are toxic for both cats and dogs.
๐Ÿฅš Eggs that have been left behind outside could look like fun colorful toys and real ones found a few days later can make your pet quite sick.
๐Ÿƒ Artificial grass used in Easter baskets and decorations can get stuck in your petโ€™s intestinal tract. We recommend using paper or even real grass.
๐Ÿงธ Easter toys that are small could be a choking hazard and should be kept out of paws reach.

If your pet does ingest any of these or other toxic items, call Tri-Lakes Animal Emergency Care right away. As a reminder, we are open Monday - Friday 2pm - 10pm and Saturday/Sunday 10am - 10pm.

With the rise of spring comes along an increase of pollen as flowers bloom and grasses, weeds, and trees flourish. Just like people, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies. Here are a few tips to help reduce exposure during allergy season:

๐ŸŒณ Wash their bedding weekly
๐ŸŒป Keep your home tidy (especially rugs and upholstered furniture)
๐ŸŒท Replace air filters

With Valentineโ€™s Day approaching, most pet parents know the danger chocolate poses to dogs, but this is a reminder that certain flowers can also be extremely toxic to your pets. Some of the more popular holiday varieties include:

Lilies (all varieties): Kidney failure in cats ๐Ÿˆ

Chrysanthemums (Daisy/Mum): Vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, incoordination, or dermatitis in cats and dogs ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•

Babyโ€™s Breath: GI upset such as vomiting and diarrhea in both cats and dogs ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•

Daffodils: Small ingestions can cause GI upset. Large ingestions cause convulsions, low blood pressure, tremors and cardiac arrhythmias in both cats and dogs. Bulbs are the most poisonous part. ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•

Tulips: Vomiting, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation in cats and dogs. Highest concentration of toxin in bulb. ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•

Roses: Although the petals are non-toxic, the thorns can be dangerous if your pet steps on or swallows the stem! ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ•

Please remember to keep potentially harmful flowers and greenery (and chocolate) out of paws reach! Use this Poisonous Plant resources guide from the ASPCA to check any flowers or plants you are gifted this Valentine's Day: https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

During the winter months, cats will often seek out any warm space they can find. Unfortunately, common cozy places include underneath a car and a warm car engine which puts their lives at risk. Hereโ€™s a few actions you can take to avoid these types of catastrophes:

๐Ÿฑ Keep your cat safe and warm inside
๐Ÿ’ญ Check on your cat before leaving the house or before leaving for a trip
๐Ÿš— Make loud warning sounds before starting your car
๐Ÿ“ข Give cats time to escape your car after youโ€™ve made the loud noises
๐Ÿ›Œ Provide a safer, alternative cozy spot for cats by setting up a cat bed, box and blanket, or an old sweatshirt

If you have a cat emergency Tri-Lakes Animal Emergency Care is open M-F 2pm - 10pm and SA & SU 10am - 10pm | (719) 434-1118
