🐾 The Truth About Grain-Free Diets for Dogs: What You Need to Know 🐶

While grain-free diets have gained popularity, they might not be the best choice for every dog. Here’s why:

1️⃣ Potential Heart Concerns: Studies suggest that grain-free diets may be linked to an increased risk of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a heart condition. Some grain-free foods, especially those high in peas, lentils, and potatoes, can interfere with the absorption of taurine—a vital amino acid for heart health.

2️⃣ Nutritional Imbalance: Grain-free foods often replace grains with high amounts of legumes, which can sometimes lead to an imbalance in amino acids and other nutrients essential for your dog’s overall health.

3️⃣ Expensive: Grain-free foods tend to be pricier than regular dog food, which can add up over time.

4️⃣ Not Always Necessary: Unless your dog has a specific allergy or sensitivity to grains, there’s no need to cut them out. Most dogs digest grains just fine and benefit from the nutrients they provide.

Remember, every pup is unique! Always consult with your vet before making any major dietary changes. 🐕💙

Understand what the FDA is telling dog owners about grain-free dog food and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) so you can make informed decisions for your pet.

❤️ April is Heartworm Prevention Awareness Month! 🪱

This April, we want to remind you how important it is to protect your pets from heartworms, especially as the seasons change. 🌞 As the weather gets warmer and we head deeper into spring, mosquito populations will soon increase, putting more cats and dogs at risk for heartworms. Just one bite from an infected mosquito can lead to severe heart and lung damage, but the good news is, heartworm disease is preventable!

Did you know? Heartworm disease is much easier to prevent than it is to treat, so now is the perfect time to make sure your pet is up-to-date on their heartworm prevention. 💉

Here are some popular options to keep your pets protected this spring and beyond:

For Dogs:
✅ ProHeart 12 – A once-a-year injection that provides 12 months of heartworm protection with just one visit!
✅ Sentinel Spectrum – A monthly chewable that prevents heartworms and also protects against fleas and other parasites.
✅ Simparica Trio – A monthly chew that protects against heartworms, fleas, ticks, and other common parasites.

For Cats:
✅ NexGard COMBO – A monthly topical treatment that not only prevents heartworms but also protects against fleas, ticks, and other parasites.
✅ Bravecto PLUS – A topical treatment that provides 2 months of protection against heartworms, fleas, ticks, and intestinal worms.

As we enjoy the warmer weather, let’s make sure your pets are protected from the risks of heartworm disease. Schedule a heartworm test or update your pet’s prevention today!

🐾 It's Dog Bite Prevention Week! 🐾

At Colquitt Animal Hospital, we’re committed to keeping both you and your furry friends safe. This week, we’re focusing on dog bite prevention, and we want to help you better understand how to read your dog's body language.

🚨 Know the signs before your dog becomes aggressive!

Dogs often give subtle cues before they show aggression. Here are some signs to watch out for:

• Stiff Body Posture – A tense or rigid body means your dog may be feeling threatened or uneasy.

• Raised Hackles – The hair along their back stands up as a warning signal.

• Lip Curling – If your dog curls their lip to expose their teeth, it’s a sign they’re feeling defensive.

• Growling – This is a clear warning that your dog is uncomfortable and may escalate if not respected.

• Avoiding Eye Contact – A dog that is avoiding direct eye contact may be trying to calm the situation.

• Ears Pinned Back – This signals fear or anxiety.

🐶 How to Stay Safe:

• Always respect your dog’s space.

• Avoid approaching a dog that looks anxious or stressed.

• Teach kids how to approach dogs calmly and gently.

Let's work together to reduce dog bites by being aware of these important cues! 🐕💙

🌿🐾 Poison Prevention Awareness Month: Protecting Your Pets Starts with Knowledge 🐾🌿

At Colquitt Animal Hospital, our top priority is the health and safety of your furry family members. This , we want to remind all pet parents about the common plants and foods that can be dangerous to your dogs and cats.

⚠️ Toxic plants to watch for:
• Azaleas
• Oleanders
• Lilies
• Sago palms
• Tulips
• Aloe
• Daffodils

🍫 Foods to keep out of reach:
• Chocolate (even in small amounts!)
• Grapes & raisins (can be deadly for some pets)
• Onions & garlic (often found in food, but harmful)
• Alcohol (even small amounts can cause big issues)
• Xylitol (artificial sweetener)

Our pets are naturally curious, and they often find things we might not even think of as a threat. By staying aware and informed, we can prevent accidents before they happen.

Let’s work together to keep your pets safe and healthy! ❤️🐶🐱

It's that time of year again: the kittening is upon us! In order to assist in the efforts of the City of Colquitt to reduce the cat population in the city limits, we have been working with our animal control officer on a Trap, Neuter, and Return project. Since we started the TNR program, we have been able to spay and neuter over 70 cats! We had previously received generous donations to keep this program going in the past, but we are running out of funds. Your donation goes towards spaying, neutering, and rabies vaccination for feral cats trapped in the Colquitt city limits so they can be returned to their colony. This prevents the overpopulation of felines in our city, as well as ensuring the health of said population by protecting them against the spread of rabies in our area. For more information on the TNR project, or to donate, give us a call: 229-758-8500 or the City of Colquitt Animal Control: 229-758-1006.
