Have you ever wondered why your pet’s ear looks swollen after they’re shaking their head? These are some pictures of Kitten, a rescue cat, who has a hematoma on her right ear. A hematoma in a cat or dog is a collection of blood that pools outside of blood vessels, which is a painful, swollen lump. This starts most commonly when your pet is shaking their heads or scratching at their ears often. Removal consists of drainage and if left untreated, it can cause cauliflower ear, or deformation of the ear.

Acetaminophen is an over-the-counter drug (commonly sold under the brand name TYLENOL®) used for fever and pain reduction. While commonly used in human medicine, just a few acetaminophen pills can be poisonous to pets – especially cats.

⚠️ If you suspect your pet may have ingested acetaminophen, call our office immediately. Try to have as much information ready as possible, including:

• How much you think was ingested
• How long since ingestion occurred
• The bottle (bring it if you can) – it can help us get a more accurate idea of how much/which drug was ingested

Leptospirosis (lepto for short!) is a bacteria that is spread through urine (p*e) of infected animals. Leptospirosis risk often increases after a hurricane or flood when people and animals have contact with contaminated water or soil. In humans AND animals, it can cause kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, trouble breathing, and even death.
