MARGE – Adopted 4/13/24, 4 month stay
Senior lady Marge came to ARF from a rescue partner. Most of her time with ARF was spent in foster homes where she could be more comfy out of the shelter environment. While at the shelter, she brightened faces at senior care centers with her generous spirit and gentle nature. Marge went on car rides to the park, enjoyed pup cups and maybe an occasional piece of egg McMuffin. One of her fosters had this to say, “We loved having Marge for a few days while her foster mom recovered from an injury. Marge loves her naps and food and is a dream to walk. She is one of the most laid-back dogs I’ve ever encountered! She greets everyone that walks in the house and acts like she’s lived here for years! Whoever adopts her is one lucky person.”

UPDATE: She’s truly been the light of our lives for the past year and a half. Marge is the snuggliest bug ever who is most content when we’re all home and cozy on the couch together. She loves to romp around in the snow this time of year and still loves wearing her cozy sweatshirts and pajamas! We quickly realized after adopting her that she had arthritis in her lower back and hips so while we only take short walks daily, she does enjoy long strolls in the park in her Marge-sized stroller.

We knew that adopting a senior gal who’s background we were unsure about would bring about a lot of uncertainties so we have had to manage quite a few different health struggles; From a Mast Cell Tumor to dental work to a very persistent UTI. Despite all of this, her spirits have always remained so high and she’s such a resilient good girl. Thankfully I work at a vet clinic so she’s received quality care throughout it all. We’re so thankful she ended up with us because we have had the ability to manage all of these issues.

Each day with Marge in our lives is such a blessing. We are thankful for her playful spirit, gentle nature, and loving soul. She is truly the best first family dog we could have ever asked for. We are thankful for our friends at ARF who provided her a safe space before she made her way to her forever home with us.

Tuxi is a male kitten with truly piercing eyes that stop you in your tracks. This handsome tuxedo boy arrived at the shelter at the start of December from a local grassroots rescue, along with his siblings, Toothless and Rolo.

After spending time in a loving foster home, Tuxi has shown himself to be a calm, quiet kitten with a soft, affectionate nature. He’s often found curled up in bed with a sibling or two, perfectly content to snuggle and soak up the warmth. While he enjoys peaceful moments, Tuxi also has a wonderfully goofy side. He’s quick to flop over and proudly display his belly, inviting you in for pets and it’s almost never a trap!

Tuxi does not need to be adopted with his brother or sister, but we always like to share when kittens arrive with family members in case an adopter is hoping to keep part of a litter together in their forever home.

With his gentle personality, silly charm and movie star looks, Tuxi is ready to settle into a home where he can continue perfecting the art of cuddling, lounging and stealing hearts.

The shelter is open Tuesdays through Fridays 3:30-6:30pm AND Saturdays & Sundays 1pm-4pm. No appointments are needed during those times. If you are not available during those times, special arrangements for a meet and greet may be able to be arranged by emailing [email protected]. Thank you for considering the adoption of a shelter animal in need!

WAFFLES nka FRED – Adopted 4/18/23, 2 Month Stay
This very sweet boy came to us as a stray. Waffles arrived with an ear infection and an abcess on the side of his face, which was likely the result of scratching at his infected ear. He was also diagnosed with FIV. Once he was all healed up, he was neutered and ready to find a home. Waffles made the cutest chirping noises at visitors to get their attention. We also must admit that we think that his face and facial expressions are some of the sweetest that we have ever seen. Waffles came across as an old soul. After having a life on the streets, he showed that he loved a bit of pampering, always ready for some brushing or petting.

UPDATE: It took just one social media post to know that I’d found the cat for me. I was scrolling on my lunch break at work when I came across Waffles: a sweet, sad-faced boy with chubby cheeks. With permission from my boss, I even left work a bit early that day; I had to go see that cat!

I brought him home that same day, and we’ve been best buds ever since. Waffles is now called Fred—though he was only about 2 years old when I got him, his personality was that of an older gentleman, and he needed a name to match.
While at ARF, Waffles/Fred was well known for his little chirping sounds. While he still chirps, he has also graduated to full meows (especially first thing in the morning!) He’s now living the good life: he loves nothing more than to share the couch with me as we watch TV, or to “supervise” while I cross stitch. Though he still has a sad-looking face, don’t let him fool you: he is so content that he often wags his tail in his sleep!

We moved about a year after Fred was adopted. Always a bit hesitant about heights, it took him awhile to learn how the stairs in our new home worked! He has since adjusted well, and loves watching the birds outside our windows. He’s also sure to be the center of attention when my roommate or I have guests over!
I’m forever grateful to Berea ARF for connecting me to my purr-fect companion.

Meet Mr. Darcy. He's eight years young and ready for his next chapter. If you’re a fan of classic romance, you’ll appreciate the story behind this handsome guy's name. Mr. Darcy is named after the famously reserved yet deeply devoted hero of Pride and Prejudice. Like his literary namesake, our Mr. Darcy may appear dignified at first glance, but beneath that composed exterior is a gentle soul with so much affection to give once he feels at home.

Mr. Darcy is an eight year old Snowshoe. While the rescue technically considers him a “senior,” we prefer to say he is 8 years young because more middle-aged than elderly, with plenty of love, companionship and cozy years ahead of him.

He came to us at the end of October through no fault of his own. Sadly, his owner was no longer able to care for him and it was in Mr. Darcy’s best interest that he be surrendered so he could find a new family to cherish him. Upon arrival, he received treatment for worms and has since been moving forward on his adoption journey.

You may notice a health waiver flag on Mr. Darcy’s file. This is due to a small fleshy bump that our veterinary team examined and identified as likely a sebaceous cyst.

To explain simply:
* A sebaceous cyst is a non-cancerous (benign) lump under the skin
* It is typically filled with keratin and natural skin oils
* These cysts can sometimes shrink or go away on their own
* At this time, Mr. Darcy’s cyst does not require treatment, but it will need to be monitored by his adopter and his regular vet

Our adoption consultant will review Mr. Darcy’s medical records thoroughly with his future adopter, ensuring you feel fully informed, comfortable and confident as you begin your life together. We want to ensure that both you and Mr. Darcy are set up for success in your life together.

Mr. Darcy is looking for a calm, loving home where he can enjoy the finer things in life including soft beds, gentle affection and someone who appreciates a mature gentleman with a romantic name and a tender heart. If you believe in second chances and classic love stories, Mr. Darcy may be the perfect match for you.

Please contact Mr. Darcy's consultant at [email protected] to arrange a meet.

12 DAYS OF HAPPY TAILS #10
TRINITY – Adopted 4/27/25, 10 month stay
Tripod Trinity was found by a Good Samaritan in a ditch on the side of the road and turned in to a municipal animal shelter. Despite appearing well cared for, no owner came forward to claim her. Trinity was transferred to ARF and after her spay, spent some time in foster. Her foster said she loved car rides, would get the zoomies and enjoyed walks, though she tired a bit quicker due to her tripod status. Trinity appeared on New Day Cleveland to represent some of ARF’s long-term dogs and cats and she was a rockstar! At the shelter, she went on outings to the park or the lake and also had a sleepover with a volunteer where she was the perfect houseguest.

UPDATE: Trinity is such a blessing! We kept her name because we couldn't think of a better name for a tripod than Trinity! We mostly call her Trin or Trinny for short. She is definitely a dog that needed time to decompress. We did the foster to adopt with her and during the time we were fostering she still was not fully trusting of my husband Chris and I. I think because we were taking her back to ARF for vet checkups and getting food that it was like she wasn't sure if she'd end up back there. She was slowly coming out of her shell, but once we adopted her and stopped going there she really came out of her shell. She loves playing with a soccer ball and chasing the wubba toy! She's also a huge tug of war player. She is so smart and listens so well. I worked a lot on socializing her and we now go to the dog park just about every day. She's got her couple of dog friends she loves to play with. Wrestling is her favorite thing to do with her doggy friends as she tries out quickly from running, but she'll chase them some. She LOVES car rides. She enjoys going to the dog beach in Stow and just laying and splashing in the water. She loves to play hard and nap hard. She just started cuddling with us around Halloween which melted my heart because that made me feel like she really feels part of the family finally. She is such a good protector and watch dog. I have MS and have trouble walking sometimes and she is like my service dog. I'm a job to her so I definitely think she's mixed with some type of working breed because it's very natural to her. She reminds me of my Rottweiler I used to have in that way. She gets so excited to see us even when either Chris or I just step outside to get the mail. She always has to greet us with a toy when we get home. She is just such a sweet girl. We couldn't be happier or love her more!
