🐕 Heartworm risk in South Carolina is climbing — here’s what to know.

South Carolina consistently ranks among the top 10 states in the nation for heartworm cases, alongside Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi.  The latest national survey found the central Carolinas now showing more than 100 heartworm cases diagnosed per clinic  — a sign that infection density is rising, not just holding steady. Recent state-level data also shows heartworm cases rising in South Carolina, along with Texas and Georgia. 

How it spreads: it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito. Wildlife like coyotes, foxes, and wolves  can also carry and spread the parasite, so risk exists even where dog infection rates look low.

🛡️ Prevention options:

• Monthly oral or topical preventives (kill larvae before they mature)
• Injectable moxidectin — a longer-acting option giving 6 to 12 months of protection 
• Annual testing — vets recommend yearly screening with both antigen and microfilaria testing, regardless of location 
• Year-round dosing — experts recommend protecting pets year-round rather than guessing at seasonal mosquito activity 

The good news: heartworm disease is almost entirely preventable with consistent medication. Talk to your vet about the best option for your dog. 🐾

🐾 It’s HOT out there — don’t let your pup pay the price.

Heat stroke in dogs can happen fast. Watch for:
🔴 Heavy panting or drooling
🔴 Bright red gums/tongue
🔴 Wobbly legs or collapse
🔴 Vomiting

If you see these signs: get your dog to shade/AC immediately, cool with room temperature water, offer water (don’t force it), and call your vet — heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Prevention tips: skip walks during peak heat (11am–4pm), never leave dogs in cars (even “just a minute”), and always have water available. 🐶💧

Jackie was born and raised in the Midlands and brings more than 15 years of veterinary experience to Garners Ferry Animal Hospital. She began her career in primary and preventive care before spending the past decade in specialty veterinary medicine, where she developed extensive expertise in ICU patient care and anesthesia.
Jackie’s professional interests include surgery, orthopedics, anesthesia, and emergency medicine. She is passionate about providing skilled, compassionate care to every patient and enjoys working in the fast-paced, collaborative environment of veterinary medicine.
Outside of work, Jackie loves spending time outdoors, especially on or near the water. She also enjoys attending live music events, gardening, and making the most of her time with family and friends.
