(GCOC) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1968 to promote the sport of dog obedience. GCOC is an all-volunteer organization made up of local dog sport enthusiasts. The club is sanctioned by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to hold obedience, rally, and agility trials in the area. Part of our mission includes public education about training and competition dog sports. We subscribe to the the

ory that a trained dog is a happy dog. The club encourages and promotes positive reinforcement and reward-based training methods.

If you have a puppy or know someone who does, Gayle Mitchiner and Jennifer Wheeler would love to see you in their fall Sunday afternoon Puppy K class! 🐶 Gayle and Jennifer are bona fide puppy whisperers and their classes receive rave reviews.

What happens in class? Jennifer explains: “We focus on teaching required skills for AKC’s S.T.A.R. Puppy program, safety skills, and focus and engagement. We also set up a mini canine confidence course each week for students to explore before and after class. There’s a sit/down/stay competition (with prizes!) during the final class, and ribbons for all S.T.A.R. Puppy grads. We focus on helping humans develop a terrific relationship with their pups and understand how to raise a puppy that can happily and safely exist in the human world. GCOC Members and Friends, it is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our esteemed friend and colleague, Mitch Mitchiner. He was a long-time member and supporter of GCOC, and his contributions to our club have greatly influenced our organization in a positive way.

Mitch will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Gayle, as well as their family and loved ones during this difficult time.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 o'clock on Saturday, April 20th, at St. David's Episcopal Church, 605 Polo Road Columbia, SC.

May we find solace in the memories we shared with Mitch and the impact he had on our community.

Congratulations to Kimberly and her Leonberger, Mister! This pair earned their Preferred Agility Champion (PACH) title at GCOC's Agility trial this past weekend, and we celebrated with style! Mister will be the first Leonberger to hold a PACH title. What a fantastic accomplishment!

Thank you to everyone who made our Spring 2024 Agility Trial this past weekend such a success! We had a great weekend. Special thanks to our trial chair Amber King and her committee, Judge Bill Pinder, secretary Tina Eastman, our hard-working volunteers, and each person who showed their skills with their fabulous dogs.

We had some big wins- one was that Shiba Inu Axel (pictured with GCOC member Kristina) completed his first qualifying run! What were your wins from the weekend? We'd love to hear about them in the comments. 🎉

The Greater Columbia Obedience Club is happy to announce we will have two days of Danielle Scott seminars October 14-15.

Saturday subjects: Blind Crosses, Running and Critical Points, Independent Backsides

Sunday subjects: Rear Crosses, Finding the Line, Tunnels

Auditing is available all days; limited working spots are available.

What an amazing FastCAT and CAT trial we had in Camden, SC! I cannot thank you all enough for your support...from the competitors, to the members of our club, and to Time To Fly for operating the lure for us.

Lastly and most important...I have to thank the GCOC Coursing Committee for their tireless service and hard work to help us pull this off. What was a notion in my mind became a reality and I cannot thank you all enough. Excited to get another date on the calendar in 2023. Thank you all also for the sweet and thoughtful gift that you presented to me...you guys tried to make me cry LOL

Good morning everyone! We are so excited to have our FastCAT and CAT event this weekend...however...we really need volunteers to help with set up tomorrow (Thursday, January 5th). The equipment will arrive at 1pm at Camden Polo Field. If you are able to help, please come. It is very labor intensive and will take several hours to complete but there are jobs that are not strenuous also. Thank you.
