We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue that provides humane education, and homes to animals in need.

We also provide training + behavior services for canines and serve the Howard County community by offering low cost vaccine clinics. Chesapeake Animal Rescue Mission (CHARM) is a Maryland-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to saving animals in need. Formerly known as the Animal Welfare Society of Howard County (AWSHC), we rebranded in 2025 to reflect our expanded mission and long-term vision. Fou

nded in 1944 and officially recognized as a nonprofit in 1951, AWSHC has spent decades rescuing, rehabilitating, and advocating for animals. 🐾 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬, 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐲: 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 🐾

They came from the same forgotten place…
but they’ve never forgotten how to love.

Lucy and June — both one-year-old, 22 lb beagle beauties — were rescued from hardship, but you’d never know it by the way they look at you. Their eyes still sparkle with trust. Their tails still wag with hope.

Now in warm foster homes, these girls are learning what it means to feel safe — and they’re ready to write the rest of their story somewhere soft, steady, and full of love.

💛 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐲 is your loyal shadow, your road trip buddy, your quiet joy.
House- and crate-trained, great on a leash, dog-friendly, and car ride–approved — Lucy is steady, sweet, and ready for her forever.

💛 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 is a heart-healer in a beagle body — affectionate, brave, and gentle with kids and other dogs. She’s also house-trained, crate-trained, and would thrive in a home that sees the softness behind her soulful eyes.

They were once voiceless.

Now, we’re hoping to bring the rest of the family home—their three sisters are still waiting behind shelter walls. The shelter is overcrowded, and these girls deserve the same chance at love, belly rubs, and safe sleep.

At just 4 months old and under 20 lbs, these three happy, playful heeler mix pups are bursting with potential. They’re silly, snuggly, and ready to steal hearts—but we can’t say yes without foster or adoptive homes lined up.

🐾✨ 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲 ✨🐾

Crabcake and Bert started their morning in an overcrowded shelter, unsure what the day would bring. Thanks to the kindness and dedication of so many — shelter staff, rescue partners One By One Animal Advocates, and an army of incredible volunteers — they got the ride of a lifetime.

Today, Crabcake is meeting her new family, and Bert is settling into a loving foster home where he can finally breathe easy.

From shelter kennels to soft beds and open arms — this is what rescue is all about. 💛

💚 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐲: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐲 🦴

Rocky is a 1-year-old Black Mouth Cur mix, weighing in at a perfect 66 lbs. He's the ideal blend of chill and playful – he loves a good game of tug or a splash in the water, but he's just as happy to simply relax by your side.

This handsome fella is 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝! He's already mastered the basics and is so ready to settle into a loving home.

Rocky has been absolutely wonderful in his current foster home, showing his calm and friendly nature. He checks all the boxes:

TODAY! ❤🤍💙 Let Freedom Ring Parade

As a reminder, we will be at the Let Freedom Ring parade. The parade will start at 10 AM, beginning at Sykesville Middle School and proceeding down Springfield Avenue and the length of Historic Main Street. After the parade, you can grab some lunch downtown, enjoy some ice cream, and shop local! 🍦

We will have volunteers there who will be representing CHARM, answering any questions you may have about fostering/volunteering, and adopting through CHARM.

She doesn’t take up much space.

This silver-muzzled sweetheart was found wandering alone, her past a mystery, her spirit still soft. The shelter is loud. The days are long. And though she greets each one with a hopeful wag, time is not on her side.

Chica isn’t broken—she’s just waiting.
For peace.
For a porch to nap on.
For someone who sees seniors not as a goodbye story, but as the most sacred hello.

She strolls with ease on a leash, loves to sniff the breeze, and melts when offered treats or a quiet hand. Her body is asking for comfort—flea allergies and sore teeth—but her heart is asking for love.

And we’re asking for 𝘺𝘰𝘶.
If you’ve ever whispered, “I wish I could do something…”
This is your something.

This is Queen Maureen — a Great Pyrenees with quiet grace and a gaze that seems to hold a thousand untold stories.

She’s not here to demand.
She’s here to offer something rare:
The kind of companionship that doesn’t shout, it settles.
The kind of presence that doesn’t cling, it calms.
The kind of love that feels like home.

At just 2 years old, Maureen has mothered the anxious, guided the young, and reminded us what gentle strength looks like. She carries herself with dignity, yet melts at kindness. She’s good with dogs. She’s great on leash. And she’s ready.

Ready to travel to Maryland on July 12th—if only she has somewhere to go.
Not forever… just for now.
Just long enough for her to breathe in safety.
Just long enough to remember that people still show up for dogs like her.

🌟We have another VERY special 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 today...Gina Lou Seibel🌟

Every rescue team needs a Gina 🙌🏻 —someone who jumps in, rolls up her sleeves, and gets it DONE.💪🏼

From the moment she joined the team, Gina hit the ground running🏃🏻‍♀️ and never looked back. She lives by the “all hands on deck” mantra, and it shows in everything she does—from fostering dogs in need to making sure our events run smoothly and with heart.💓

Gina takes on fosters who need an extra special touch—whether it’s dogs who’ve suffered severe neglect or pregnant mommas needing a safe place to land. She gives her all to the dogs who need it most.💕

Gina is a powerful reflection of our mission. We are so lucky to have her helping lead the charge as our events team lead.

❣A few words from the amazing Gina about rescue:

“Rescue for me has come full circle. I grew up in a rescue household. My Mom fostered for years, and I’ve had a love for dogs and rescue ever since. In 2020, Josh and I decided to foster - enter puppy Luna and (our first foster/fail) Nola 💓 It wasn’t long after that I started working more directly with the adoption teams. A couple of years and a handful of fosters later came Bentley. For a combination of reasons, this dog changed my life and how I embrace rescue- forever. Later came the crowd favorite, Kevin. Our pack is complete, for now, but our mission continues.

At CHARM I jump in where I can. Sometimes, I go back to my original roots and help the adoption team coordinate adoptions. Mostly, I help lead the Events Team. CHARM has a bunch of great events coming up that I’m super excited about. Fostering is a bonus 🙂
With a houseful of dogs and 2 little kids, it’s busy, beautiful, chaos.”
