"Hello, my name is Susan Hardee, and I’m originally from Charleston, South Carolina. In 2014, while changing a flat tire after donating at Goodwill, the scissor jack collapsed, shattering my left arm, breaking bones in my right foot, and causing back and spine injuries that led to Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. During treatment, doctors also discovered Chiari Malformation Type 1 and a crushed fourth brain ventricle, conditions that explained lifelong symptoms and required a spinal cord stimulator implant.

As a dual service-disabled veteran of the United States Navy and Air Force, I was also exposed to burn pits and toxic chemicals, resulting in COPD, skin cancer, and additional back injuries requiring rods and pins. Despite these challenges, I remain active in adaptive sports such as climbing, triking, archery, hunting, and fishing, and I enjoy astronomy, photographing planets, and building rockets with my grandkids.

I discovered PAALS through the Georgia State ADA Coordinator’s Office and was honored to be selected to receive my incredible service dog, Morgan, whose support has been life-changing and given me independence I never thought possible."
