Brown recluses are out in full force!

Native to Central Missouri, they hunt their prey at night, spending their entire 2-4 year life span sharpening their skills. Their bites can be irritating and sometimes severe.

If you see these pests around your place, call Atkins!

Show us your cicada pics!

By now, you've probably heard or seen cicadas buzzing around your trees or shrubs. They don't bite or sting, and are a valuable food source for many animals.

Yes, they can be a little annoying, but they will only be around for a few weeks (and won't return for many years). Cicadas can even aerate your lawn and can add nutrients to the soil as they decompose. If you're worried about your younger trees or shrubs, cover them in mesh or netting temporarily. This can protect them against damage that could occur when cicadas deposit their eggs in small tree branches. (Source: US EPA)

Rot. Sometimes, the silent killer of trees. Left untreated, it could result in the removal of what looks like perfectly, healthy-looking trees.

One of the trees suffered from root rot, while the other had heart rot. Together, these two would create quite the mess if they were to fall on their own, or worse, on the roof of their owner's house.

Call our expert tree team, that includes two certified arborists, if you think you've got a tree that needs to be taken down.

The Emerald Ash Borer. A most-destructive pest for your precious ash trees.

The beetle is metallic green. The larvae typically come out off trees in April and May, which is the best time to treat your trees. Look for woodpeckers feeding primarily in the upper limbs of your ash trees. If left untreated, most ash trees won’t survive more than 3-4 years due to the damage caused by these pests.

Give us a call as soon as you see these pests on your property. You'll be glad you did!

Ticks are the worst this summer that they've been in a long time! Changes in temperature and day length are some of the factors signaling a tick to seek a host - you or your pets.

Ticks are a vector for a number of diseases including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other tick-borne diseases. They are commonly found in the woods, but if you're not mowing your grass that often, they might settle in your yard, too.

Get rid of ticks and keep them away. Call Atkins today for a free tick consultation.

We take daily vitamins to stay healthy, but your lawn needs to be taken care of, too!
Don't haphazardly throw random things on your lawns without knowing what you're doing.

Phosphorus and Potassium (Potash) are two great nutrients found in most fertilizers. Soil testing, weather forecast watching, experience from one season to the next, familiarity with your plants and their needs can also help you choose the right materials.

Our trusted team can help you decide what your lawn needs. Give us a call!

Water deep and less often is our best advice!

This summer has been brutal on lawns, and summer's not over yet! In a drought season like we’ve had, an irrigation system is a blessing and could be the difference between keeping your lawn and landscape alive versus having to seed the lawn this fall and/or replacing trees and shrubs.

Having an understanding of what water needs you have within your lawn and landscape will help to ensure that each area is getting the proper amount of water and you minimize waste. Got questions? We can help you with that?

This Brown Recluse is smiling because it found a cozy spot to live in your house. A female can lay up to 50 eggs per egg sac.

Have a lot of cardboard in your basement? Inside, they will gravitate toward things that look like a more natural habitat, like tree bark.

Check your shoes, inside dresser drawers and that pile of clothes your husband left on the floor.

Our Story

In 1908, T.E. Atkins, Sr., starts mixing minerals and chemicals for his own use on his farm in rural Boone County, Missouri.

In 1925, the Atkins family began their migration from rural Boone County to the City of Columbia when Thomas E. “Country” Atkins, Jr. started mixing chemicals for customers.
