💉🐾 RABIES ALERT: A local reminder to protect your pets!
A recent confirmed case of rabies in a cat right here in our community is a serious reminder that keeping your pets up-to-date on their rabies vaccine isn’t just important, it’s vital for their safety and yours.

Your pet’s annual exam is also the perfect time to review vaccines, update preventatives, and run routine bloodwork to catch early signs of illness. Preventive care truly saves lives.

📅 If your pet is due for a visit, give us a call today to schedule their exam and vaccines. Let’s keep our community safe and healthy! ❤️🐶🐱

If you suspect an animal has rabies, it’s important to act quickly and carefully, because rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. Here’s what you should do:
1. Avoid contact: Do not touch, approach, or try to capture the animal. Rabid animals can bite or scratch unexpectedly.
2. Secure the area: Keep pets and people away from the animal. If it’s a pet, confine it safely without risking a bite.
3. Contact authorities:
• Local animal control or police: They can safely capture or quarantine the animal.
• Your veterinarian (if it’s a pet): They can advise on next steps and rabies vaccination status.
4. Wash any bites or scratches immediately: Use soap and water thoroughly.
5. Seek medical attention: If you or anyone else was bitten or scratched, go to a healthcare provider immediately. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) must start as soon as possible.
6. Report the incident: Local health departments often track rabies cases. Reporting helps prevent spread.
7. Monitor your pets: Ensure they’re up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. If exposure occurred, your vet will advise whether a booster or quarantine is needed.

⚠️ Important: Never try to kill, handle, or “test” a suspected rabid animal yourself. Safety comes first.

Positive Rabies Alert -

On Tuesday, 10/21/25, the Blairstown Police and the Blairstown Ambulance Corps responded to an address on Kishpaugh Road for a cat attacking an elderly couple. Upon arrival the officer was able to attend to the wounds of the couple and requested animal control. ACO Robbie responded and was able to capture the cat. The cat had signs of injury to its face from a wild animal and was sent to the State Health Department lab to be tested for rabies. The test results were expedited due to human contact and visible signs of injury to the cat from a wild animal. The cat tested Positive for rabies.

The cat was a feral cat the couple had been feeding outside for the past several years. ACO Robbie would like to remind residents to be mindful of feeding feral cats. Don't leave cat food out overnight or unattended. Raccoons tend to be carriers and mostly feed at night and this will help avoid outside cats coming in contact with them.
