Don’t shock him into it, teach him!
I was speaking with an acquaintance who was stumbling over words trying to explain his reasoning behind the use of a shock collar. As he stood there shifting from side to side it was quite apparent that he was aware that I was sitting on ready to rebuttal any non scientific based response and explain, once again, the basics of learning theory. He stood still, threw up his hands as if to concede and blurted out, “A shock collar is quicker!”
The only rebuttal I had floating around my head at the moment was, well bless your heart, brain surgery would be quicker without anesthesia too but I bet you would make time for it!
Dogs feel pain and have fears and anxieties as we do. It simply isn’t enough to bring a dog home, feed him, love him and think we have provided all he needs. He needs mental and physical stimulation that does not include screaming and chastising him. He needs adequate nutrition and Veterinarian care. He needs positive reward based training that teaches him and doesn’t shock him, pinch, poke or choke him.
If you don’t own a dog and can provide all that is needed in maintaining a happy, healthy, well trained, well loved pooch, get one, for you’ll find that no truer words were ever spoken or written than what is said of a dog, “Mans Best Friend.”
