City Roots new Organic facility located in Richland County, SC during construction Nov. 2023. We have installed 2 acres of solar panels to offset our energy consumption. The new 75,000 sq. ft greenhouse is heated and cooled through a first of its kind geothermal radiant system imbedded in the greenhouse floor. The greenhouse roof, walls, and shade curtains open to fully to allow for ventilation or heat retention depending on the time of year. The greenhouse is fully computer operated and controlled by a weather station to provide optimal growing conditions.

Here are our microgreens freshly sprouted!! At the beginning of growing we keep our seeds covered until they are well germinated. Then we expose them to light!

Notice the pretty golden color of the leaves? This is because they have not yet been exposed to light. As soon as they are uncovered they will begin to turn green.

A chemical called chlorophyll is what makes plants green. With the help of this chemical plants are able to convert energy from the sun into chemical compounds that they can use to live and grow!

BIG NEWS!!

On Tuesday we announced our plans to expand operations to 93 acres in Richland County!! This will allow for greater production so that we may reach a wider range of costumers. And with the construction of new eco-conscious greenhouses we will be able to reduce energy usages for a greener and better world.

Our cover crop is looking good this week!

Did you know? Cover crops manage soil erosion, soil fertility, soil quality, water, weeds, pests, diseases, biodiversity and wildlife.

Here we have planted Cop pea legume for soil fertility and
Buckwheat and Sunflower for pollinators and beneficial insects.

Added plus- we get to enjoy all the pretty blooms!

Sunrise at the farm. One of the best parts of the day. Harvesting microgreens in the stillness of the morning, before many have risen for the day.

Photo taken by our Greenhouse Manager Heather. She always knows how to capture the early morning beauty.

Research has found that the growing conditions can greatly affect the nutritional content of Microgreens.

If grown in ideal conditions (bright sunlight) the nutritional content will be at maximum levels.

Here at City Roots we grow our greens in greenhouses using the readily available light of the sun. Supplementing with artificial light during days where there is not sufficient sunlight for the greens to develop (cloudy days and days in mid winter.)

Things are looking amazing over here. With the help of Alder Energy, we have installed several new solar panels across the farm! Now 50% of our power is generated through solar. Yay! 🌱🌎

How is this done? The power our farm generates through solar goes directly to the Dominion Energy grid and then we are credited for the power we supply to the community.

New and exciting things are always happening at City Roots, so keep your eyes open for new posts every week!

URBAN FARMING ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

City Roots is a family-owned, 3.5-acre organic farm located on an urban site in the Rosewood neighborhood of Columbia, SC. We grow microgreens, seasonal vegetables and some fresh herbs using organic farming methods. With our partner group, Cannetics, we also grow greenhouse industrial h**p clones for permitted farmers. City Roots serves the Columbia community and points across the state with our products, including top restaurants, chefs and grocers, and we now proudly offer a selection of pickled farm products!

Our top priority is to produce the highest quality products while educating our community on the benefits of local food and stewarding the land we farm. From humble beginnings in 2009, we now operate with a staff of over 15 people to ensure our patrons in Columbia and the surrounding areas clean, healthy and sustainable produce year-round.
