As we gear up for the festivities of the 4th of July, it's essential to remember that while we enjoy the celebrations, our pets might not share our enthusiasm. The bright fireworks, loud noises, and bustling activities can be incredibly stressful for our furry friends, often leading to an increase in lost pets during this period.

In fact, more pets go missing during the 4th of July weekend than any other time of year. The sudden and intense noises can cause pets to panic and flee, sometimes getting lost in unfamiliar surroundings. To help ensure your pet's safety, we have a few important tips:

Microchipping: This greatly increases the chance of being reunited with your pet should they get out. It is a quick technician appointment and can last for your pet's entire lifetime.

Keep Pets Indoors: Fireworks and loud noises can startle pets, causing them to bolt. Keep them inside in a safe, and enclosed area

Create a Calm Environment: Provide a comfortable space with familiar items to help soothe your pet. If you know your pet is already sensitive to sound, sometimes having music or the TV on low can help drown out the celebratory noises

Update ID Tags: Ensure your pet’s collar has an up-to-date ID tag with your contact information. Ideally, only two fingers should be possible to place between the collar and your pet's neck

July 4th is only a few weeks away. Do you have a pet that is anxious during fireworks? Now is the time to call your veterinarian to schedule an evaluation and determine if anti-anxiety meds are an option. 931-489-9333

A quick reminder: check to see if your pet's microchip info and phone number are up-to-date just in case your pet gets out or runs away during the celebrations. If your pet is not microchipped, we can get that done in the next week.

It's a good idea to put your pets in a closed room with a tv on to distract them from the noise and help keep them calm.

You can schedule an appointment online as well. www.yourpetsnewvet.com

Like us, you are probably starting to see and hear these creatures walking and flying around your yards. The question is: "Are cicadas harmful to my pet?"

Overall they present little threat to our animals as they are not poisonous or venomous. However, if eaten in large enough quantities, they can lead to GI upset with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. These symptoms can lead to the need for medications and even hospitalization due to secondary dehydration. Therefore, its best to train your pets not to eat them.

Additionally, they are related to shrimp and other types of shellfish. So, if you or your pet has a know allergy to shrimp or shellfish, it is best to avoid them.

There are likely still quite a few left to emerge, but they should be gone by late June to July.

Good information. Thank you Dr. King
