Leeya Summers is a 2 year old American bully who presented through our emergency department for evaluation of a heat stroke. Leeya was in critical condition at presentation and our skilled staff quickly assessed the situation and began cooling Leeya down immediately. Leeya was in respiratory distress and began to show signs of petechiae (small red or purple spots caused by bleeding into the skin). She received life saving care including a plasma transfusion to provide coagulation factors that are consumed during the process of a heat stroke.
Luckily Leeya bounced back quickly and ended up going home the next morning! She received a LOT of cuddles and love during her stay with us!

that xylitol (aka birch or wood sugar) a common sweetener found in sugar-free gum, candies, and some peanut butter brands, is toxic to pets, especially dogs? Eating even a small amount of xylitol can cause a sudden release of insulin in dogs, leading to low blood sugar, seizures, and even liver failure. Keep your pets safe by double-checking ingredient labels and avoiding feeding them human snacks and desserts. If you suspect your dog has ingested a sugar substitute, take them to an emergency vet ASAP.

On Monday, we introduced you to Reese, a 22 year old calico. With early diagnosis and proper management, Reese continues to live a long and happy life. Renal disease is a condition that occurs commonly in dogs and cats. It refers to the process where the kidneys or urinary system components have become compromised or have difficulty functioning at their full capacity. However, most commonly it’s the kidneys that become affected. Renal failure can progress quickly and be fatal, if left undiagnosed or untreated.
This is where the importance of lab work comes in: by monitoring renal levels on blood and urine testing, veterinary professionals can identify kidney changes faster, leading to early intervention.
Renal disease is irreversible, but treatment options exist that can help pets with this condition live longer, healthier lives. If your senior pet is past due for a screening, book a visit with your vet today. Read up on renal disease here: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/thrive-guide/renal-disease-and-the-importance-of-prescreening

Meet Reese, a precious 22 year old calico. Her owner has had her since she was seven weeks old. She was adopted from a shelter and is the “best cat in the whole wide world” . Reese is well known in the neighborhood, in her younger years she would follow her owners around while walking their dog in the neighborhood. The neighborhood residents, even those who are not cat fans, love Reese💕
Reese was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in 2021 and I-131 treatment was given here at South Carolina Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Care. I-131 is a procedure where radioactive iodine is given and the thyroid function returns to normal in most cases after one dose. The treatment was a success. She is currently being co-managed by Dr. Mabry, from our Internal Medicine department, for early stage renal disease and Dr. Barton at Blue Pearl of Columbia, our campus partner, for pain management. Just like us, Reese's aging joints are a bit painful!
Reese is a trooper and we know that Reese has the best team involved in her care!

Meet Saba - she was hospitalized with us for a few days recently, after her mom noticed concerning symptoms and brought her to our Emergency Department. Saba was found to have Addison's Disease. This is a rare endocrine condition in dogs caused by a lack of hormones produced by the adrenal glands. Abnormal clinical signs in dogs can be quite variable and non-specific (i.e., lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst and urination, hair loss, weakness) and range from mild to severe. Fortunately, Saba's condition was caught early and responded beautifully to the medications required. While she will need these medications indefinitely, this condition should not restrict her from living her best life at home! From Saba's mom, Vanessa S. - "Dr. Gonzalez and Dr. Mabry both provided excellent, professional and caring treatment to my dog. They kept me informed and updated throughout my dog's hospitalization. Most importantly, they were super kind to me and my pet. Happy to report my sweet dog is back at home and thriving. I highly recommend these two veterinarians for your furry family member's care."

If you have a dog, you should know about foxtails (aka "grass awns"). In the spring and summer, they thrive in fields and along roadsides and hiking trails across much of the US. Foxtails can lodge into your dog's ears, paws, and nose - causing discomfort and leading to infections if they aren't removed. Learning to spot these spiky grasses and how to check your dog from nose to tail can go far in preventing injuries and infections. If you find a foxtail and can't remove it, take your pet to the closest urgent or emergency care vet for removal and care.

Meet Santi! He presented to SCVSEC as a transfer for post-surgical care from our campus partner, BluePearl Pet Hospital Columbia. He and his wonderful family traveled from Myrtle Beach in order for Santi to receive surgery for repair of a diaphragmatic hernia. Santi stayed in hospital with us for 3 days while he recovered with a drain in place. Santi is a very sweet soul who won over the hearts of many of our team members! All he wanted was cuddles and kisses during this healing process, and we were happy to oblige! Santi and his family were very excited and eager to see each other at the end of his stay . We wish Santi the very best during his recovery journey!

"Dr. DeLorenzo and her team are AMAZING!!! When my pup was bitten on the face by a rattlesnake, we rushed him to their office and they immediately assessed him and went into action to save him. He had to stay with them overnight, but I received a status update phone call every three hours throughout the entire night. Not only did they save my sweet pup's life, but every single person in their office was SO kind, caring, patient, professional, and attentive to our needs. My pup has made a full recovery now. Thank you all so much!!!!" - M. Adams and her precious pup Watson, thanks for sharing your story from your visit to our Emergency Department. We are so glad Watson is home and hanging out with his buddies!

My eyes are your eyes,
To watch and protect you and yours.
My ears are your ears,
To hear and detect evil minds in the dark.
My nose is your nose,

And so you may live,
My life is also yours.

Jaxx is an adorable 3 month old Yorkie that fractured his tibia. He has been coming to SCVSEC for weekly splint changes, which he handles like a champ! Jaxx is scheduled to have his re-check x-rays soon to see if his fracture has healed enough to stop splinting, but we have to admit we will miss getting to cuddle such a cute patient each week!

Meet Kristen R:

Kristen is one of our hybrid employees. She primarily works in the back as a technician, but through her time here has spent a lot of time manning the front desk. She is always willing to fill in when we don't have enough coverage for our weekend shifts. Kristen loves to joke around and is so gracious with our clients and their fur babies!

Tidbit about Kristen: "I am a collector of all things Lilo and Stitch! Stitch is my favorite Disney character.. he is both a villain and a hero."

Thank you so much to all of our front staff - you are so appreciated! Even though CSR week has come to a close, please remember to ALWAYS be kind to your veterinary CSRs. We love to be there to help patients and clients in the most stressful situations, and we love to be the first face you see!
